Thai-Mien Drug Lord Sentenced To Death

BANGKOK: -- The Thai Supreme Court has affirmed the death sentence for a former narcotics trafficker who had been eluding arrests for almost a decade before he was apprehended in China.

Mr. Jirasak Chattawornniti, 32, is accused under the charges of possessing enormous amounts of methamphetamines and heroines with the intention to sell, and conspiracy in drug trafficking with more than two individuals.

Better known as Ar Sun among the police and the drug traffickers′ circles, Mr. Jirasak is originally from a tribal ethnics called Mien, who populated northern Laos and southern China.

Mr. Jirasak was not present at the court today as the judges read out his death sentence, affirming the previous rulings of the lower courts. Officials said the defendant has been already informed of the verdict in Khao Bin Prison, Ratchaburi province.

The Thai police issued an arrest warrant against Mr. Jirasak in 1999 on the charge of trafficking narcotics from foreign procurers to distribute them in Thailand. However, the suspect managed to slip away to Laos, where he reportedly started a furniture business to cover up his drug trade.

During his tenure in Laos, Mr. Jirasak is said to have purchased huge amounts of illegal drugs from Myanmar (which was called Burma at the time) and Laos, and smuggled them to his various agents in Khlong Toei district of Bangkok.

Mr. Jirasak reportedly left Laos in early 2005 for China. But joint efforts between Thai and Chinese police forces eventually led to his arrest in the Chinese city of Kunming in the same year.

The suspect initially contested the Chinese effort to extradite him to Thailand, claiming the rights to fight his case in Laos due to his Mien background, but the Thai authorities insisted that Mr. Jirasak was still holding his Thai nationality.

The Chinese police flew him to Thailand in February that year.

Death penalties are routinely handed out by the Thai courts in high-profile drug trafficking cases, despite repeated pleas from rights group Amnesty International that the Thai government should abolish execution.

What is the point of imposing a death sentence that they have no intention of carrying out. He deserves it.

No worries for him, they will execute the wrong person,

I am a staunch advocate of the prohibition of the use and the trafficking of illegal drugs. I am equally opposed to state sanctioned murder i.e. execution. Life imprisoned, especially here in Thailand, is a much more unpleasant and fitting way to end the days of these pedlars of misery.

At the quality of Thai courts I would better not carry death sentence out......

I think they will carry the sentence out on this guy. Due to the fact that he fled from Thailand and the charges , then had the audacity to continue on with his drug trafficking ways, importing drugs into Thailand from outside the country. Then fought extradition. There isn't much more a person could do to infuriated Thai authorities. Had he played ball with the police from the start he would most definately had his sentence commuted to life. This guy is 100% gone IMO.

They run because they know that they know that their ability to make payoffs is cut off. They know they will not have support of their Thai gangster Mr. Big network, so they run. They have no sense of morality about the crime and the victims, they are Thai and run because it is an economic issue.

And their efforts to characterize him as "Thai-Mien" because his roots are in a northern Thai tribe is an attempt to deflect attention away from the fact that he is Thai.

The Buddhist state of Thailand forget their Buddhism when needed. I hope the ghosts of Buddha himself will punish them one day. I'm sure that day will come.

I guess he can't be transferred to a non-active post either?

sidenotes:

when he left Thailand (1999), he was about 18 Years old. So most of his criminal career (in Thailand) was done,

before being an adult ! (as many insist here, being a child!)

He went to Laos. All criminals activities he did there, would be primarily an offence against Laos Laws

and did not taken place on Thai soil!

Ok , he left Thailand as an 18 year old teenager, and is now extradited from China to be killed by the

state of Thailand.

He was a drug lord in his early 20s? Is this guy properly Thai or a guy who bought nationality? Ummm. Someone will shut him up quickly before he spills his guts.

.....never heard of any drug lords being executed.....

....just a few weeks ago another guy got a slap on the wrist.....they seized a few million baht....end of story....

Hang him, zap him, shoot him, just get rid of the bastard....but do it SLOWLY!

Amnesty International is full of well meaning but sanctimonious folk who would quickly change their tune if one of their family died as a result of taking the filth that this monster was peddling.

I don't care if Drug Lords and or dealers are from China, Russia, Australia, America, Africa, Thailand or Europe, they deserve DEATH. Do what they do to them in Malaysia, "Swing them High", they did it to a couple of Australians a few years ago and it worked very well as the offenders NEVER AGAIN dealt in Drugs.

I see we are following the trend of reclassifying criminals with Thai nationality into half-Thais again.
