Bangkok Bank and the Embassy of your Country.

Featured Replies

Why? I'd think it is pretty standard to be able show proof of an address. I'm defending Bangkok Bank, but I don't think they are asking for the moon.

I have accounts with them, and my first account I opened was 10 years ago on a tourist visa, but then they didn't seem to really bother about having loads of documents.

Of course you should have proof of your address, I had the blue book with me. Is the UK Embassy the only place you can get proof of your address? That's if they actually know it. Does any other bank demand a letter from your Embassy? I see you have not commented on my experience with the Emporium branch.

How were you dressed Possum? biggrin.png

Perhaps your dress had a detrimental effect? I've got an account there and always wear short pants when I visit. I believe that's the key to opening an account at the Emporium Branch of Bangkok Bank

I was waiting for this, I was wearing my shorts rolled up above my knees to show off the Tattoos on my leg, was wearing a simmet to show off the tattoos on my arms, did not shave for a week. Nothing I could do about my stomach though.

That'll be it then. laugh.png

If your address is in a different province from the branch you're trying to open the account in, then they won't do it.

The banking system in Thailand is divided up into provinces. They're almost like separate entities, or at least divisions of the same company.

I opened my Bangkok Bank account in Chiang Saen, in Chiang Rai province (that's where our house is) using my wife's Tabien Baan as the address proof (she also has an account in that branch). I couldn't have used that to open an account in Bangkok, neither could she.

They all seem to want different things. There are many, many threads, or posts about people's differing experiences opening accounts.

It seems that the best thing to do is to keep going to different branches/banks until one of them lets you open one.

Hope you get it sorted smile.png

Thanks, I appreciate you being nice about it.

No problem. I must be frustrating to come up against problems like this. Keep trying, one of them will cave in! ;)

Why does Possum keep going on about his Blue Book. It means absolutely nothing in Thailand for a farang to have a Blue Book, you are not listed in it so it does not prove anything.

I have a chanote in my name, the Blue Book for the condo I own, yet I still need something to prove my residence all the time here in Thailand. Sounds like the OP thinks he is in the west where proving your are right is more important than being right

Too bad he didn't get to the stage where they asked him for his work permit to get Internet Banking at Bangkok Bank. But all that takes is a phone call to Bangkok Bank's head office to inform the branch that a work permit is no longer required and is a coding issue within their registration program

I agree with you about the blue book, but this being Thailand, I thought it would be better to take everything that could possibly help.

Also, your passport stamp tells anyone you are resident in Thailand.

I know what country I'm in thank you very much, also, your last paragraph doesn't make sense to me at all, I don't remember mentioning anything about internet banking although I would have wanted it if I had got an account, and I have not had a work permit for two years. Also, why should I want to phone their head office? You seem to be all mixed up, or maybe it's me thinking I am back in the west.

I was just pointing out that you just hit the tip of the iceberg when dealing with Bangkok Bank. You feel your experience was bad, I am just telling you HOW it could have been worse

I guess you showed them OP.Third world non sense chai mai.

I tried different branches, different MGR's .I've gone in with decent clothes and smiles. I was even told to go to BKK bank in Bangkok to apply. Sakon Nakhon branches employee's and manages still want a government employee to guaranty me.My GF just has a retail job,she doesn't qualify I guess. I want to use BKK Bank especially because I can wire money from my USA bank to BKK Bank of New York it only costs $8.00 total and I get the same exchange rate in the USA and the money shows up in BKK bank in Thailand 3 days later.

The bottom line for me is these bank branches and locations seem to have different ways to interpret policy even though they have the same name.Oh Yah,even the Thai Immigration moves to the same beat! (lol)

How times change, the first Bangkok Bank account I opened was with £100 and I was only in the country for a week before going home! Been with the same branch ever since.

At least the bank staff were polite to you, more than could be said for you..."get me your boss, now", "I just turned and walked out"

I can imagine how distressed they must have been to lose your banking business.

I think the joke here is not Bangkok Bank.

There is no need to defend bank, because every bank need proof of address. They actually don't need someone driving license, because they open accounts only for mature man who able to drive legally. Driving license have a address, which is from either WP or Residence Certificate.

The bank just don't need to collect a lot of trash accounts w/o movements or contacts from their owners. And yes, in tourist areas Kasikorn opens accounts easily even for tourist on exempts and hotels addresses.

Thanks, but I'm not interested in how it could have been worse. I will follow Pibs plan, which has given me some encouragement, and the reason I used this topic in TV.

I said "get me your boss now" because I was lied to. If you were told something by someone and went to act on it, then found out it wasn't true, would you be happy? There was no way I was going to go to the trouble of getting a letter from the UK Embassy, so I turned and walk out which I was entitled to do. I think the biggest joke here is not the Bangkok Bank. It is you.

Flames and reply removed.

Then let's close the thread since it is obvious that the OP is just going to continue to inflame the board and is positive that his attitude is the correct one
