Phuket Governor calls off SuperCheap fire site search, announces no deaths

Is there any particular reason she hasn't gone to the authorities?

Since the highest authority in Phuket has assured us that there were no deaths, do you honestly think the authorities give a dam_n about some dead (probably illegal) Burmese workers?

Most Thai locals that I've spoken to all agree that there was probably a high death count in the fire, but that the news has been suppressed.

I'd be interested to see the signed resignation letters of the 100 Burmese workers who apparently 'resigned' after the fire.

If your friend was Burmese and not Thai, I can understand what you mean going against the Governor. However, being Thai, she has a bit more to stand on then being an illegal Burmese. What can they do to an upstanding, tax paying, law abiding Thai citizen for inquiring about her missing staffs family members?

If there's a cover-up then it won't last long in these days of social media. And if it is proven so, Governor Maitree should immediately be forced to resign, though we all know that won't happen.

Exactly, which is why I am convinced there is no coverup, in spite of the ruomur mill.

Simon, they're not talking about Burmese resigning (i.e. leaving their jobs) but re-signing, which means they are registering with Supercheap to be re-employed. Read the earlier posts.

Still no evidence of any fatalities BTW.

Er no, you are wrong.

And if you want some further news about this, take a look at this recent Phuket Gazette report:

http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket_news/2013/100-SuperCheap-workers-unaccounted-for-at-Employment-Office-22638.html

where it's reported that of these 100 Burmese workers who Supercheap said had resigned (not re-signed), not a single one of them has reported their resignations to the Labour office, as required by law,

This is especially strange since the report mentions that Supercheap has a special arrangement with the employment office to help their migrant workers get new jobs - a fact that their migrant workers must be aware of.

Strange isn't it? A big fire and 100 Burmese staff disappear off the face of the earth.....

Yes, especially strange since it are only the Burmese that have disappeared and no Thai. Maybe the Thai government has used the opportunity and sold them as slaves?
