Do You Live In A Farang Ghetto?......

Featured Replies

The owner of the hotel I'm in is fantastic with me. He's a Doctor and so kind, and he's the only reason I stay here. I'm getting worn down by the farang ghetto aspect of the general area and of parts of Chiang Mai. I guess it would be even worse in other places.

I think the next time I come back I'm going to bite the bullet and move out country somewhere, possibly Chiang Dao area. I'm at my happiest when I'm surrounded by beautiful countryside and the unique mix of people that live in the Northern countryside. I find it fascinating. It will also force me to learn Thai too. Immersion is probably the best way of learning for me.

Do you feel that your area is going too far down the farang ghetto path?

I'm 12 Km out from CM centre, near MaeJo Uni, no foreigners on my moobaan, surrounded by rice fields and mountains.

You don't need to go as far out as CD, although I've seen plenty of foreigners in CD, try Fang (further out) or Mae Dtang (closer).

Once you get away from the Loi Kroh and Nimmanhamin, central moat areas, very few foreigners around, if any.

Since you are a trend-setter you shouldn't be telling people to where you are planning to move.

When I saw the thread title, I naturally assumed the Pattaya or Patong forums. I thought CM was the Holy Land to which those other guys escaped. Silly me. rolleyes.gif

When I'm there, there's only 3 of us. Me, Henry from Holland and Giere the Norwegian pig. I'm not a Giere fan, he invites you round and never offers a drink. I hate that, it's very rude. I don't go round there much anymore. Norwegian people are lovely, but Giere isn't. Henrys a great neighbour, great guy to know. The locals call the village the falang village, so maybe they would say yes it is a falang ghetto, but I think since there's just 3 of us, must mean theres not many westerners around and not a falang ghetto.

Three is two too many.

I'd say finding a place in Thailand where your the only non Thai would be rare. Would you agree?

Not a Ferang in sight! (most of the year) 20 minutes drive to the town.

Surrounded by rice fields and mountains on the outskirts of little farming village, suits me just fine.

Like I said, I'm near MaeJo, never seen any foreigners in my moobaan (250 houses), the shops or streets outside, or the 10 beer bars down the road (unless they came with me). Most foreigners congregate where there are other foreigners, TB hangs in tourist areas only, but is looking for that 'off the beaten path tourist area' where only a few other tourists hang.

I could give TB (or anyone else) a night out in CM, where the only foreigners would be us, busy night spots right in town.

Even in Bangkok there’s plenty of areas where you won’t see many foreigners.

I got a shoe box up in Din Daeng and it’s like Ghetto Central, Thai that is and it’s rarely that I see any other foreigners in the immediate neighborhood while 15 minutes away they’re like everywhere.

No, but at the moment, I honestly wish I lived in a farang ghetto. I live out in the middle of bloody nowhere, and it's getting irritating. Apparently, we're VIPs here, and we even coined the subdivision "VIP Home". We don't associate with you city dwellers, and instead build entire sub-divisions in the middle of nowhere.

Will you take us home afterwards?

Depends,

I am not. Fang is somewhere I would consider. Phrae as well as I have a pal that lives there. I donàt socialise in the areas you mentioned, I haven°t been to Thapae Gate since the end of July I think, and Ive not been in loih Kroh since the Old Bell shut down, except to attend a birthday party.

I was out last night at a place where the owner says he doesnt want farang customers. I can see his point, he runs a cracking business already, no need to change the formula.

Have been the only Farang for 8 years, love it that way, No Bars, no night spots, a couple of mom & pop markets and a handful of food stalls.A lot of great people!

I only know one other Farang in my Village who is a friend .I am in Sansoi just 8 km out of the City .He is married to a Thai like me .

True, especially since half of the people in Thailand claim to be Chinese of some sort...

Yes, not offering drinks is quite rude!

That's quite ironic, because the amount of non-Thai people living in Din Daeng is quite striking in comparison to elsewhere in Bangkok. But then again, to tell the difference between Thai and other people from South-East Asia and South Asia is a little harder.

The thought never occurred to me but you could be right actually.

Only Farang in the Moo Baan, one of probably single digits in the city, and less than 100 in the province I'd guess. And still only 3km from the nearest KFC and Big C, 25km from the nearest air conditioned shopping centers, international schools, an American theme steakhouse and an international airport. Not that I ever go to any of them, might meet one of you ghetto dwellers. tongue.png

Plenty of farang in my apartment block and the surrounding area but still predominately Thai's who live here. Suits me fine.

You couldn't pay me to live in some remote Esarn town,

I know one place.....HERE.

theblether is looking....only he will find that place he is looking for, sooner or later.... Welcome back here anytime to write those books.

Keep searching, don't end up a square peg in a round hole...

Lamphun is wonderful - a 5 baht trainride to Chiang Mai if I want western food or a bookstore.

Do you feel that your area is going too far down the farang ghetto path?

a suggestive question with an embedded unwarranted strong bias ("down" in context with "ghetto") which indicates that you possess only limited and selective knowledge what the majority of resident Farangs prefer.

here's my suggestive question: "did you stop beating your wife or (if applicable) your occasional girlfriend?"

"I would rather wake-up in the middle of nowhere than any city on earth."
