ttthailand
Outside the rainforest hotel on soi 5 beware of the karaoke bar across the street. Total scan low life's ..... Thinking I would stop in for a beer and chat with a girl for an hour knowing it would be a few baht. Checked out prices prior but after 45 minutes decided to go and was charged for two hours room girl and untold lady drinks.... Hahaha... Total scam .... For sure !!! Popular Post CMNightRider
I'm surprised anyone would even go to a Karaoke Bar in the first place. Renting a girl so you can sing songs with, and then buying her watered down expensive drinks doesn't sound like a good time to me. There are so many single women in this city to date or even hookers that you can rent by the hour, why on earth would you rent a girl to sing songs with you? My guess is the girls that work in the Karaoke Bars, must think that any man who would rent a girl to sing with them, must be a little short on brain cells, so the girls just take advantage of them. :-(

I would have thought that anyone who has been on this forum as long as you have, would give anything with the name karaoke bar a very wide berth. Maybe you don't believe all the other horror stories? Hahaha.... I am not from this area so I was on my way home and wanted one last beer. This place was near my hotel and looked friendly enough. I know to avoid these places but perhaps the beer was doing my thinking. I did ask prior to going in how much the beer, lady drink and room cost was to avoid any later problems.... I thought ... Hahaha. I think I was in there for about 45 minutes, two beers 300 baht and two lady drinks 400 and room 200 my figure based on what i was told. Ended up they said I was there for over an hour, bull sh-t, my drinks ok and lady drinks ok but then they said hostess drinks were 3 at 250b each ... <deleted> what were they talking about... The lady who came to bring us a drink and two other ladies who stopped in for a second I guess .... I never said yes to any drinks or even knew anything about. They wanted 1850 baht. I let they know they were a bunch of <deleted> and dropped the money on the floor and walked out.... I was a little pissed but my own fault for thinking that there was even a chance of not getting ripped off. Liars every last one of them .... Gives a bad reflection on the entire country as the government lets it happen... Same like the jetski scams. FiftyTwo
You got off lightly, bills of 20k are not uncommon. If you must visit these places you say, I only have 500bht, let me know when I have spent it.

Some guys have received bills for 30000 baht in those places, and when they refused or couldn`t pay, were taken outside, beaten up.and escorted to an ATM to withdraw money for the payments. Avoid establishments that call themselves, VIP, clubs, executive and karaoke and for massage parlours avoid those that call themselves spas. Nope they dont call the cops they take you over to a vacant lot and beat the living shit out of you as happened to a farang not so long ago who was seen by a tuk tuk driver and taken to hospital. Once you get the bill there will be a bunch of them waiting to see if you have a problem.
anonymouse
This sort of set up is something that happens all over the world. A couple of years ago two naive friends of mine [though old enough to know better] were taken by a London rickshaw driver to a basement club where they were taken to a private room by a bevy of Russian beauties who ordered champagne, come time to leave they were given the bill of roughly 30,000 baht for the pleasure of these girls drinking with them and a bit of flirting. They were both escorted to an ATM one at a time to get the money needed to pay.

Although it is true that Thailand is becoming more Westernized and Thais follow tradition and custom less and less as time goes by. I have seen, over the years, Thais freak out if a banknote ended up on the floor and someone stepped on it whether accidental or deliberate. TallGuyJohninBKK
I'll second the comment about potential problems with defacing or otherwise doing bad things with Thai money, because the bills have the image of the King. Especially with Thais, you really don't want to be messing with that. If the urge absolutely can't be resisted, throw something else on the ground. But leave the Thai currency alone.

muchogra
Late last year I came up to inspect my house under construction in the suburb. I took a tuk tuk from the moat to my home at around 11 pm. Right after crossing the Narawat bridge, the tuk tuk driver asked if I wanted to have a drink, sing, and flirt with some sao sao (young ladies). I said no but made a mistake by saying that that would cost a fortune. He said it wouldn't cost a fortune but only about B500 each having a couple of deks (youngsters) flirting for an hour or two. He stopped the tuk tuk, and off they came, a couple of girls from a karaoke bar on the right. They started flirting with me but I told them I was just too tired to sing and praise them for their beauty and I promised I would come back. Some people here said it right. A bunch of guys would be watching when an inflated bill is presented to you. Unless you go with a bunch of friends that you know would back up one another when trouble comes, don't go!...Yeah, some here would say why bother at all, but sometimes you need to act like a man when injustice occurs, but best be prepared if you do need to go to unusual venues.
