Where does all the water come from long after the rain has stopped?

In Thailand, for an hour or two after a heavy rainstorm has stopped, all over the place in the city water continues to pour down noisily from roofs, pipes and gutters on to awnings, pavements, roads etc. The buildings where this happens are not necessarily that tall or large.

Where is all the water coming from long after it's stopped raining?

Just curious. I'm sure there's a simple explanation.

Most roof tops are flat, especially around the city. They normally have a couple of 1 to 2 inch outlet from the roof top to let the water out. However most outlets are blocked and the water after a heavy downpour takes sometimes hours to drain off the roof. Other sloped rooftops have guttering and downpipes, they are usually blocked with overgrown vines or rubbish and plastic bags. Hope this is a help.

So you're suggesting blocked pipes? To me, that would make sense if the water was just a dribble - and, yes, it's true that hours after rain has stopped and you're walking along the pavement you can have to dodge dripping water from overhead.

But I'm not really talking about dripping water. I'm more talking about when you get the loud clatter of a lot of water pouring down on to a plastic or metal awning - but the rain stopped a long time ago.

So I'm not sure blocked pipes are the answer. But thanks anyway.

In our area many places have roof top rain barrels. We have a dual valve system that allows us to collect rain water into the barrels and when full we use within the house. However many times if people are not at home and we have turned our valve off all the water that collects in the rain barrels will over flow and continue too until we switch the main city water valve off. So we will get this continuous cascade of water coming off our "roof" long after it rains
