Extortionists Arrested for ‘Protection Racket’



Officers of the “Centre of Protection for Children and Women,” arrested a gang of armed scammers who claimed to be Thai Government officials. These extortionists were collecting ‘protection money’ from foreign workers, who were actually legally employed.

PATTAYA – November 4, 2013 [PDN]; – At 12.10 a.m. Police Lieutenant Colonel Passakorn Paijit, the Deputy Superintendent and Inspector of Wattananakorn Police Station, who was acting to assist the work of the “Centre of Protection for Children and Women”, (Section 2), receive a complaint involving extortion.

Together with Police Lieutenant Itthiphol Thongnak, Police Lieutenant Warakorn Bannasit and a police team, they arrested Mr. Kemruse Harzon aged 36, and Mrs. Kanokporn Harzon aged 27, plus Sergeant Major (1st Class) Yuthana Khanthong aged 51, who actually belongs to “The Security Office of the Thai Army.” He was carrying a “Taurus” 9mm. pistol and also had 12-9mm. cartridges in his possession, so the police arrested them at the “Little India Shop,” locates at 216/41 Soi Diana Inn, within South Pattaya City, in Thailand’s Chonburi Province.

These arrests were due to the senior commander getting a complaint from a Bangladeshi businessmen in Pattaya City, that there were groups of people claiming to be officers of ‘Internal Security Operations Command,’ who came to collect monthly payments from Bangladeshi people, who were working legally with “work permits.” If they didn’t consent to pay the gang 2,000 THB (Thai baht) ’protection money’ per person each month, then they would not be able to work in Pattaya City. This resulted in some Bangaladeshi people going to give evidence to the police, so the officers of an arresting team were commanded to inspect and take action in this matter.

Its funny to see those on the sofa busy with their phones and the others pointed at hem ...... and one more time some extortion from people with uniform ..... You want to avoid corruption ? PAY your army or police well .... that might stop them to ask for tea money.

It works in our homes LaurentBkk, I worry that corruption is so ingrained, and openly accepted in society here that it may take generations to make changes. No matter how many of these gangs you bust there will be another doing the same or similar, because they are simply like children copying what they see from the only gang sanctioned to operate within the country: the cancer within the Thai Police force.

I feel sad when I see good cops working hard, because it is those hard working guys that bust the gangs like this, whilst the crooks are out teaching these kind of people how to ply their trade and taking their cut for the efforts put in on their behalf.

The only way to attack corruption, the Thai people would not be willing to accept at this point. You would have to make the crime of corruption in government (police, civil service, schools) punishable equivalent to what it is... treason (the selling of the country) - which means some executions and many held in jail or hard labour for long periods of time. It takes a very strong leader with a strong hand at the top to tackle this. It would mean the cost of policing would also have to go up. I have seen NO politicians yet who pay more than just lip service to it.

So the answer to extortion and bullies is to pay them more? Interesting idea. Unfortunately doesn't work because the more they have the more they want. Look at the greed that permeates through the upper echelons of Thai society. No respect for law and order because they know it doesn't apply to them.

Look at the photo - 4 foreigners pointing - do the Thai couple look remotely worried? Hope the Bangladeshis have all their work permits, visas, company registrations, taxes, number of Thai employees and accounts in order. I'm sure they'll be getting a visit soon.

I've arrested a few bad guys in my day. Some tried to look cool and said they could call in favors or their lawyer would get them out of jail. They said that right up to the time they were changing into the orange jumpsuits at the lockup and rinsing out their drawers out after you know what hit the fan.

Don't let facial and external expressions fool you. They are often a smoke screen to hide the sheer terror festering inside.

As for the visits to the Bangladeshis from the "visit soon". It appears to be speculation at this point unless there is more credible information you can provide.
