Looking for iPhone Unlocking guru in Chiang Mai

I purchased an iPhone 4S from Thai Visa Classified ad a few days ago. I phoned and spoke with the owner, a British gentleman, and we chatted about the phone and he assured me that the phone was unlocked and in excellent condition and could be used with any SIM card in Thailand, no problem. I liked what he told me, and since he did not live in Chiang Mai he proposed that I deposit the money into his Kasikorn bank account and he would then send me the phone via ems mail service. He was very nice and personable, and since I heard kids in the background I assumed he was a family man, and well, let's just say the transaction felt good to me and my hunch was to trust this person and agree to the terms. So I went to Kasikorn bank, gave the teller the seller's name and account number and deposited the money into his account. I immediately called him afterward and told him that the deposit had been made, and he said that he would send the phone out to me the very same day. A day later, sure enough the phone arrived and I immediately took it to AIS near Thapae Gate to get it activated with a data and talk plan. However, to my surprise I was told that the phone was locked and so could not be used with an AIS SIM card. I immediately called the seller while I was still sitting there at AIS I call edit he seller but got a recording that said that the phone number was no longer active. Today I took the phone to a Mac Care store in Kad Suan Kaew and they told me the same, that is was locked by a company called UK Hutchison, but the technician told me I could go to their website and request the phone to be unlocked so I could use a Thai SIM card. So I went to UK Hutchison's website and there indeed is a link to unlock the phone, but it is necessary to input the phone owner's name, date of birth, address, UK postal code, etc. all of which I don't have. So I'm wondering if anyone knows of a iphone unlocking specialist who could help me in Chiang Mai. By the way, I know, I know...I should have known better.

Get an unlock from sinfuliphone -there is a pinned post in there of a doing factory unlocks. That's essentially all the local guru guy will do anyway, with his own fee tacked on.

The only place I know that could possibly do it is the guy that owns the games place near the station.

Once I took a locked I-Phone that came from the UK but was locked, he could not unlock it due to the phone being stolen.....no I did not steal it!

If it can be unlocked, he can do it.

There is a one of the little shops on the top floor of Kad Suan Kaew that unlocked mine. Long story short when I came to Thailand I was still in contract with my iPhone 4s and when I took it to be unlocked, they sent it to another shop and they had it about 3-4 weeks, the phone was blacklisted (naughty I know) in the UK because my original contract was about 18 months into its 24 months plan. It took a while but they did it and now have a normal contract plan with AIS and never have any problems.

If you take the escalators to the top floor of KSK you double back on yourself and there are a few little kiosks on the left hand side, it cost me 3,000bt but they guaranteed they could do it, and do it they did. The kiosk is run by a couple.

Yes, there's bound to be a shop in KSK or Pantip that can do the job. It's amazing what these guys can do with any form of IT gear. I hate hearing about how that guy burned you though. He'll get his, someday.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Let my experience be a warning to those thinking about purchasing a phone from the classifieds. First, buy local. That is, make sure to meet the seller in person. Second, make that meeting place a carrier site such as an AIS shop, and don't finalize the transaction until the phone is in working order with the SIM card installed. A bit too late for me, but maybe not for others out there reading this.

The simple method is upstairs in KSK a decent size shop that sells a sim adapter

They are next to a shop that sells hundreds of phone covers

The name of the adapter is called Gevey

These guys are the makers

Cost us 700 baht installed & worked fine

It is a hardware rather than software solution

We'll, problem solved. I took your advice, Frank James, and went to Pantip Plaza and found a young Thai couple with a baby (across from the AIS shop) the young man unlocked it for me for 1500 baht and it took only an hour. Now I have an AIS data and talk plan on an iPhone that I thought was going to end up as a coaster. Thank you Thai Visa Forum!

Meechai, funny you should mention the Gevey SIM as I believe that is how they unlocked my iPhone...plus the labor/tech fee, but that's okay as I'm a bit of a techno peasant and probably would have screwed it up had I tried to install the SIM on my own!

You know the 700 I quoted was maybe 2 years ago so no worries on the 1500.

Also it is good you let them do it the first time because aside from installing the Gevey

which is easy enough you do need a sim cutter to cut a stock sim down to apple size

Not sure if they told you but, it use to be that anytime you shut down a gevey phone there

was a little song & dance you had to do. Forget exactly as my wife has now switched to Android but

it was in the instructions & on their site. Something like switch to airplane mode & hit a number etc.

Not a big deal & may be different now but just so you know.

Only needed if you power off the phone

I bought mine in the U.S (aSprint phone) and it was a software unlock for $30. I was told not to update the phone, so it is still 6.0. Once, I let the power get to zero and it took 20 minutes to re set it. About every 6 weeks, I also have to re set it. I was in Chiang Mai last summer and it worked great with a local SIM card. I have seen on the internet, a company in London will do the mechanical unlock but charges $150 to do it. Would the mechanical unlock described above for 1,500 baht be the same? If so, I may have it done in either CM or Bangkok the next time I come over.

Paid 8000 baht. Not a scratch or nick on it and the screen is flawless. Now that it's been unlocked I'm very happy with it...and very satisfied with AIS -- though I wish I knew how to get all the SMS messages from AIS in English as my reading and Thai writing is at the first grade level, plus the stylized fonts AIS sends via SMS makes it difficult for me to decipher.

I'm not sure if anyone has cracked v3 yet but the previous versions you can do yourself.
