New TRUE DOCSIS router, WiFi has extra unwanted network.

I've just had True install a 15 Mbps cable internet, they've given (sold) me a 4-port WiFi router branded as "Technicolor" (!).

I've set up what they call the Primary Wireless Network and its OK. I don't really need it as I have an Apple Airport to support WiFi.

However, there are problems:

1. The DOCSIS router has an additional WiFi network called Tech_nnnnnnn that I can't access or delete. It's on the 5MHz band, even though my configured network is stuck on 2.4MHz.

2. When I try to switch off the WiFi altogether, the router just won't do that - WiFi is permanently on whether I like it or not.

My guess is that True have set this up so they can get into it anytime from outside my house. For me it's an unwanted security risk and power drain, and I'm not happy with it at all.

Anyone seen anything like this? Any ideas about what I can do about it?

Can't True give you the answer?

If they cant, or wont, tell them to take the router back and buy yourself a new one. Not much else you can do.

TRUE recently replaced my router...then a week later had to replace the replacement...then two weeks after, had to replace the replacements replacement..

The first was a cheap "BILLION" so I wasn't surprised but the next was a ZYXEL which are supposed to be pretty decent. I suspect they stock a lot of refurbished units.

We'll see how the second ZYXEL does.

This is a "DOCSIS" (cable) modem/router; not a xDSL modem/router. I don't think you can use any modem/router for the basic connection to the cable network other than what True offers as the cable router is married to the network just like True cable TV boxes are married to the network. Now you can possibly put the True-provided DOCSIS router into bridge mode (depends on the model) and use your own Wifi router to blast out your Wifi connection...some people do that.

I'm on True DOCSIS 15Mb/1.5 plan like the OP but have a True-provided Thomson model (had a True-provided Cisco model before it developed an upload problem and was replaced with the Thomson). I didn't have a second network issue like the OP mentions, either with the current Thomson or Cisco before. Both of these models only used the 2.4Ghz range but Wifi could be disabled on both.

I also have a True cable modem/router (Motorola from memory) but it does not have wireless. I thought he was referring to a separate router hence my suggestion - I don't remember paying any extra for the modem but may have done? I use my own wireless router.

I have now cancelled my subscription to True cable internet, as I was unhappy with the performance as well as the strange additional network. True DOCSIS users can only check for an extra wireless net using a WiFi scanner or looking for available networks on a PC, iPhone etc. My case may have been a one-off attempt to hack, or may be part of True's means of keeping control. Whatever, I'm happy to be back on TOT ADSL and want to forget the whole thing.

True has used a lot of different DOCSIS modem/routers...and it continues to change. And when I say modem/router, it could be a modem only where you do need a separate Wifi router or a integrated modem-router which has the Wifi router built-in. Seems True usually provides a free modem-router, sometimes they might charge Bt1000...it all depends on the promotion at the time. I think when I signed up for DOCSIS years back if I wanted the modem only then no charge; if I wanted the modem-router combo then a Bt1000 charge.
