I'm always slightly nervous about leaving valuables in the hotel room so I use the security box if there is one. Has anyone had any bad experiences with cleaners? Or do you think generally they are ok?

I spend around 60-65 days every year in various hotels somewhere.

I always use the safe for valuables.

Although, if they want, they can open it whenever they want to.

But I have never ever lost anything in a hotel room.

Never.

Maybe lucky, but never ever lost anything.

never had any problem, but have valueable things with me or in the security box or well hidden.

If there is a lot money visible on the table it might attract weak people. Hidden in the closed suitcase it already need some bad guy who looks for it.

How do you know they haven't taken a small amount? 100baht, 500 baht 1000 baht every few days.

I am one of those who are almost obsessed about having a system in my stuff, so I know exactly what I have.

Money is always carried, and never left unattended, except coins, which I never carry (put them on a plate for housekeeping to take anyway).

What about you scubascuba3?

Have you had any bad experiences.

Come to think about it, this is probably one of the extremely few issues left where people on TV have not claimed Thailand is the worst in.

True, very true.

A few years ago I backpacked and stayed in hostels or cheap hotels and guesthouses a lot all over the world. They didn't usually have safety deposit boxes or even lockers so your stuff would often be left around in a bag or laying around. Nothing stolen from me thankfully.

If I have a safety deposit box I'll use it. Unlikely the cleaner will have access to that but the hotel will have a master key.

At my current apartment when the cleaner comes in I'll lock stuff away but I don't imagine she would steal anything. Not worth her job probably.

stayed in many places in asia from 200 thb a night to 10.000 per night always leave some money (200/300 thb) in easy to find places just to see if someone would go through my bags (never leave it open since they might 'assume' it is a tip). but never got anything stolen here

when I first started coming here I would just leave any change etc on top of the dresser, it was always there when I came back to the roombiggrin.png, cleaners know it isnt worth their jobs to steal your stuff plus I would always be nice to them and thank them. Did have one cleaner that would point the water nozzle where you would stand and get wet when you turned the shower on but I think that was because I left the room a bit messy a couple of times so I just laughed it off. There are probably some not so trust worthy types at suspect hotels but I doubt there would be many, most are nice people.

You almost need a retired cleaner to spill the beans. If I was a smart dishonest cleaner I wouldn't take any change, its too obvious, I'd look for cash and if I found some, take something that wouldn't be noticed so if a number of 500s or 1000s or 100s, take a couple. Hopefully they are just too honest and just isn't worth the risk

So you're actually hoping, regardless of all the posts to the contrary in this thread, that Thai cleaners are generally dishonest? Your posts reflect more on you than they do on Thai cleaners coffee1.gif

in short NO i dont trust them.

Get robbed few times, never big.

The last june at my place, 40 euros by my part-time maid while i was away for few days. Or maybe it was the owner... i did know them for years!

They just do think i will not notice it... luckily they didnt take all the money(half thousand euros i keep in case i lose my credit card) or the expensive stuff.

I think anyone who needs money may be tempted, cleaners are probably on the lowest wage so if there is an opportunity and they are dishonest then they might. Best to keep things locked up and safe just in case. As for me, I'm whiter than white :-)

Many hotel stays and only one bad experience, and not in Thailand.

I'd checked in around 2pm. I didn't expect anyone to come in and clean, so I left my stuff -- including loose cash -- strewn on top of the bed, and went out. When I came back, the room had been tidied. I was surprised, but since cash was still lying there I wasn't suspicious and didn't count it.

Next day when checking out I looked under the bed. The bed was backed against the wall, and way in the back near the wall I saw a piece of paper. Moved the bed away from the wall and discovered it was a US$100 bill. No way did it walk there by itself.

Didn't work out for the maid, but it was a very clever trick.

No problems.

I am always home when the cleaning girl is there.

I always conduct a cavity search before she leaves!

No problems!

Assuming you mean the kind of cleaners that clean rooms, as opposed to the other type (who I would be very nervous around) I once had a very unusual experience in a BKK hotel. Actually I had a few unusual experiences but they would take me way off topic.I had come in wearing a 5 baht hold chain and went out for lunch without it. When I came back to the room I went to my safe to get the chain out and it wouldn't open. I then noticed that my three suitcases! all with combination locks were still showing the opening combination, all the same but only three digits. The safe was four digits and when security came to the room they accused me of forgetting the combination as the safe had locked up because the incorrect combination had been entered three times.

Now I know I didn't enter the wrong combination. It's impossible to forget your sons birthday, wife perhaps. I always wondered if anyone seeing the same three digits on all three suitcases might assume that they would also be my safe combination and had tried randomly to find the fourth digit. In fact if anyone had assumed this they would have assumed correctly and it was my luck that they never got it. Impossible to prove anything, but following Occams Razor........

Had a couple things go missing in a hotel in phuket once, one was just small souvenir bought near the beach for a hundred baht or something like that, turned the whole room upside down looking for it as I thought I might have misplaced it after a drunken stupor, had no else in the room as was only a short stay but only noticed it was gone before checking out
