Sunday morning robbery attempt in Chiang Mai

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

I was riding my bike down a Nimmanaheamin soi aroung eight a.m. Sunday morning. I have lived in Chiang Mai for two years, and don't think twice about riding my bike anywhere. Two dopey looking guys stopped me with their scooter and the driver said "Phone." I answered "Arai?" He said

"Phone." I said, "Pom me phone, tam mai?" I have a phone, why?" He said "Ow phone." - Want phone. I asked again, Tam mai?" The guy on the back then pulled out a big gun and pointed it at my head. I looked down the barrel and looked at him and said "No!" and rode off. I figured he would shoot

me or not, but if he did it would be a moving target in the back. They fortunately didn't follow. But what I did notice as I rode on is how deserted

Nimmanaheamin Road area soi's are on Sunday morning. I wanted to duck into a coffee shop, but eveything was closed. So I guess this is a

warning to be careful if you are walking or riding a bike in that area on Sunday morning. Maybe any morning before nine. I consider Chiang Mai a

safe city to live in, and this took me by surprise. I usually avoid potentially dangerous places alone at night, but this was in plain daylight - so its

important to consider how deserted this city can be early in the morning. There are stupid robbers anywhere you go in the world - met a couple here in Chiang Mai and it was a bit frightening. I won't ride in that area before ten ever again.

Taking this at face value perhaps the MODS could move it to the Chiang Mai thread?

There are a lot of video camera's in that area for homes and businesses. Walk around and look for a camera that might have captured the event.

Maybe they can be apprehended and not victimize anyone else.

If you can find a video and not interested in filing a police report then video can be uploaded to CM108 to find the 2 accused.

Are you allowed to file a police report? Could be a defamation issue.

I don't want to die in the streets of Chiang Mai. It was about making a call. I had an iPhone, a new Apple Mac and several thousand baht on me.
Sure things aren't worth dying for, but I wasn't about to just hand them over to two idiots because they asked for them. The guy looked too stupid

to pull the trigger, and a bit stoned. My hauling ass took them by surprise and I doubted he could accurately fire that gun at a moving target. I think

that if the two guys were polished robbers there would be no question about handing over my things or I'd get shot - in this case they were two

dumb local who blew a robbery. Making it simple for them would only have encouraged their success, and the desire to continue.

I would say that you have been very lucky this time not to have been shot especially if they were on drugs.

find this very hard to belive, not saying your a troll but, post smells fishy, after two days of event happening, you decide to go puplic, and sunday like any other day in los,and nimman sois not quite at any time of the day. trollish i would definitely say,

Too many trolls here nowadays.

Too stupid to pull the trigger? That just makes it easier to shoot. Anyway, I figure this is all hogwash and it never happened.

Yeh u handled that well. I'll give u a free tip. When someone points a gun at your head and only wants your phone. Give him it. ESPECIALLY if he looks drugged up or drunk.

Your a hero...... .....

What Nimman Soi were you on? Was that Soi west or east of Nimmanhaemin? I'm just curious, having lived a bit longer than you in that area.

You life more valuable than any phone. I would say you were lucky.

So do I.

Did the OP managed to get a description and reg number of the motorbike?

What action are the police taking after he made his report?

defame who?

No one is named.

Was referring to possibly doing a police report if identifying info was available from suspect description or plate numbers.

If you don't have witnesses or supporting evidence could this be defamation?

I'm sorry,OP. Won't let our son go out at night again. He always thinks it's Songkran, we always tell him to wait. He'd painted the "gun" black now. Is it the one he'd pointed at you?-wai2.gif

Over common in Thailand, few friends of mine did get robbed.

First one: Some of you know, might know Mike, the manager of a tony's gym in Pattaya. One early morning while driving to work,

he came accross 2 thais hiding in a soi, one of them produce a wood plank and hit him on his head. Luckily he didnt lose balance, and

was enough lucid to drive away.

Second one: another guy, Peter. One night while driving back home, 2 thais on another bike came near him, and once again, one of them produced a

wood plank and hit him hard. He fall down, the thais did runaway with his motorbike.

One more: this time, a thai friend. While driving, he got stopped by some junkies. They pulled out a gun and robbed him of all his valuable.

.........

If you read the news section of phuket/pattaya/chiang mai/..... you will found a huge number of stories, similar to mine, are over-common.

Shit can happen any time, any day. Nooooooo question. If your in the wrong place at the wrong time it's bad luck. That goes for anywhere on the planet.

YA, I find this hard to believe coffee1.gif

few more to my message above:

a friend of mine, a thai girl. While walking back home, i think it was Bangna, got heavily hit on the neck/head. The scum did steal her gold necklace.

She does have a ugly scare from this. At the police station they didnt even record her complaint. They just told her there is nothing they can do.

One more, a thai friend a my gym. His girlfriend while walking back home in Bangkapi area got her purse stolen by two thai guy on a motorbike.

One more, a thai friend while walking, was victims of snatch, hit and run. They didnt succeed to steal his bag, but my friend got his neck lacerated because the bag didnt break.

....

you might think, my friend are all unlucky. NO in fact the main reason, i guess is i do have more friend than a some member here.

I do socialize a lot because of my age. So i meet more people than the average member here... and i don't hang out in bar!whistling.gif

ps: By the way do you remember a year ago, this american or english woman who did in Bangkok, she was a victim of snatch. But her purse didnt break and she got dragged, her head did hit the pavement.

I believe it .... Thais on motorbikes ripping off people is very common all over Thailand. Not being there it is hard to judge what we would really do. There are a lot of stupid people here, Thai and farang. The OP is however lucky that things turned out ok....

Have seen two same type events happen right in front of me to other people. Also had two guys on a bike try to grab my phone off my belt. That happened 10 years ago in Pattaya. Knocked the sh-t out of the guy on the back and they took off like a scared rabbit. Things like this happen hundreds of times a week in Pattaya now. I am sure Phuket and Chiang Mai is not much different. I tried to report to the police the time the guys tried to get my phone and all they said was " did they steal your phone... Then what's the problem" ... Police just don't get it !
