Thailand, New Zealand to strengthen cooperation and trade

BANGKOK, Nov 20 – Thailand and New Zealand have agreed to double their trade volume by the end of 2020 and enhance bilateral cooperation and investment.

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra met with her New Zealand counterpart John Key and his business community delegation at Government House yesterday.

Ms Yingluck urged the New Zealand private sector to boost their investment in Thailand particularly in food and beverages, information technology, manufacturing, logistics, public health and infrastructure development.

The two leaders witnessed the signing of three memorandums of understanding on tourism cooperation, a letter of intent between the Thai Civil Service Commission and eight higher education institutions in New Zealand, and cooperation between the Thailand Professional Qualification Institute and Auckland University of Technology.

Ms Yingluck expressed appreciation to New Zealand for its successive support under the Mutual Assistance Programme. (MCOT online news)

PM to monitor Constitution Court's verdict at Government House

Nigerian First Lady meets Thai Premier

BANGKOK, 20 November 2013 (NNT) – First Lady of Nigeria Patience Faka Jonathan, wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, met Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra during her official visit to Thailand to attend the ITU Telecom World 2013.


The First Lady is leading a Nigerian delegation to take part in the ITU Telecom World 2013 which is taking place at IMPACT Muangthong Thani until November 22. This is her first visit to the Kingdom of Thailand.

Miss Jonathan called on Prime Minister Yingluck at the Government House during which they discussed the good bilateral ties between Thailand and Nigeria. On this occasion, Miss Yingluck praised the Nigerian First Lady for her roles in supporting women and children in Africa, while Miss Jonathan affirmed to the Thai Premier that she would do her best in pushing for greater participation of women in the society, not only in Nigeria and Africa, but also in other parts of the world.

Miss Yingluck also reaffirmed the Thai Government’s invitation extended to the Nigerian President to attend the Thai-African High Level Dialogue which Thailand will host in the northern province of Chiang Mai in February next year. The dialogue is meant to further strengthen the already strong ties between Thailand and countries in the African continent.

Verdict by Constitutional Court delayed by two hours now

BANGKOK: - The Constitutional Court judges have not taken the throne to read out the ruling despite two hours after the schedule.

The court was initially scheduled to read the verdict at 11 am.

The monitors for providing video feeds from the courtroom have blacked out.

Officers insisted it was not a technical error but they switched off the monitors to save energy and the equipment as the judges were still in the meeting.

Farmers are not paid yet for their rice sales

BANGKOK: -- As the Commerce Ministry says it will sell 1.2 million tons of rice to China today and the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives is issuing bonds to raise more funds to buy more rice from farmers entering the rice-pledging scheme, farmers in several central and northern provinces said they have not yet received money from the sale of rice to the government.

Impeachment motion signed by over 100,000 voters

BANGKOK: -- More than 100,000 people have signed an impeachment against 310 MPs, who voted for the controversial amnesty bill, the spokesman of the Democracy Monument demonstration announced.


Akanat Promphan, the spokesman, said at 11 am that protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban will submit the signatures to Senate Speaker Nikom Wairatpanij Wednesday afternoon.

Red shirts protest against Democrat at head office

BANGKOK: -- The pro-government red shirts rallied outside the Democrat Party head office at noon Wednesday. They blew sports air horns outside the party in a protest.


The red shirts belong to the "Red Ubon Ratchathani" group and they traveled by bus to join a rally at Rajamangala Stadium. They called at the Democrat head office to protest against it before they would proceed to the stadium.

Democrat MPs, led by MP Chinnaworn Boonyakiat, shouted to the red shirts in unison as "Slaves get out."

The red shirts then returned to the bus and proceeded to the stadium.

BANGKOK: -- At 1.25pm Wednesday, the Constitutional Court started reading its verdict in the case of senatorial charter amendments.

Judge Suphot Kaimuk was the first one to read the verdict.

Amendment bill's second reading violated regulations: Constitutional Court rules

BANGKOK: -- The Constitutional Court ruled Wednesday that the second reading of the charter amendment bill on senators' qualifications and elections had violated the meeting regulations.

In the verdict, whose reading was still going on, the court said the debates by MPs and senators, who disagreed with the majority side of the vetting panel, were cut short.

Moreover, the court ruled, the votes counts were retroactively done.

Third reading vote illegal: Constitutional Court says

BANGKOK: -- The Constitutional Court ruled Wednesday that the voting for the senatorial charter amendment bill was illegal because coalition MPs were seen on a video clip to vote for their peers.

The court stated that the law required each lawmaker to vote freely without being influenced by others.

The court said the conduct of voting for others was against the principle of honesty.
