Chalerm warns Suthep of possible sedition charge

BANGKOK: -- Labour Minister Chalerm Yubamrung has threatened to arrest protest leader Suthep Thuagsuban on charge of sedition if the protest turns violent.

Chalerm who was recently placed in charge of dealing with the anti-government protests by the prime minister said Friday that police were still in the process of collecting evidences in order to nail people who have been financing the protests.

He,however, noted that if there was violence it would not have started by the police because they were strictly instructed not to carry any weapons at the protest sites. They are armed with tear gas, batons, shields and guns firing rubber bullets.

The labour minister went on saying that he had consulted his private lawyers in order to lodge defamation charges against former Democrat MP Suthep for accusing Thaksin Shinawatra of aspiring to become president of Thailand.

Regarding the Constitution Court’s judgement on the draft constitutional amendment, Chalerm said he rejected the ruling as a symbol of protest.

He said he found the court’s reasoning that selection of senators was better than election of senators as shameful.

So if you beat someone to death with a baton it is not a violent crime? Laughable.

It looks like Chalerm missed the memo that he WASN'T in charge if the security of the protests.

If the police are "strictly instructed not to carry any weapons at the protest sites", how come the protest-guards were able to detain an armed plain-clothes without-any-ID policeman at the site, last week ? wink.png

Perhaps former-DPM Labour-Minister Chalerm should investigate, and report back with appropriate excuses, within 90-days ? rolleyes.gif

Now there's a law that really needs changing in Thailand - free speech - Suthep can say what he wants/thinks if those listening don't want to believe it then that is entirely up to them - voicing an opinion is not and should not be a crime

Hawaii? Bingo! Your post jarred what's left of my mind into realizing that Chalerm looks almost identical to Buffalo Keaulana, the great Hawaiian surfer...

Of course, Chalerm can't surf...

Among the many things he can't do facepalm.gif

Check out Chalerm's picture, how intimidating... in Hawaii they call this look "stink eye". "You give me stink eye, I fight you!"

On the other hand, Suthep rather looks as if he is crooning at karaoke: "Love me tender..."

In Thailand they call this look "where's my whisky soda?".

Are you sure that's the only thing he missed?

How is it possible to sue someone for defamation if their comment is not about you ?

Surely, even by Thai Law standards that would be too farcical ?

Still Pol.Capt. Labour Minister and PTP party list MP Dr. Chalerm does have a PhD in Law so he must know what he is doing rolleyes.gif

Sounds like weapons to me.

The man has made his fortune, as lackey to the most corrupte of the Thai governments, over the past few decades, his assisment of who will/can be charged with sedition, most likely comes from charges that can/could have been filed against him during his various public speeches/press releases, and actions in the past. It would be a breath of fresh air to the system and theThai people, if this man, his family and cronies were treated with the same minsewt as they have displayed toward the legal system, during their time of bleeding the nation dry.

Inciting to riot and advocating the violent overthrow of the government is an act of sedition, and a very serious offense in most countries.

Chalerm may be a motor mouth but the industrious Suthep seems to have developed a commendable set of gnashers

Which riot are you speaking of ?

I missed the news report on it...

In most other countries a government that behaved like this one would have stepped down a long time ago therefore avoiding such public intervention as we see going on right now

They either need to step down or call early elections before this really gets out of hand - denial and lies isn't working any more.

Tarit's threats to the protestors have been getting publicity so not to be outdone Chalerm has to get in on the action.

What Suthep said on stage last night to Chalerm about arresting him was "bring your mum and dad with you" guess he was inferring that he would need some backup. He also invited Chalerm to join him on stage.

But off course that would pass right over the top of Chalerm or in one ear out and out the other - nothing in there to stop it.
