BANGKOK: -- Labour Minister Chalerm Yubamrung has threatened to arrest protest leader Suthep Thuagsuban on charge of sedition if the protest turns violent.

Chalerm who was recently placed in charge of dealing with the anti-government protests by the prime minister said Friday that police were still in the process of collecting evidences in order to nail people who have been financing the protests.

He,however, noted that if there was violence it would not have started by the police because they were strictly instructed not to carry any weapons at the protest sites. They are armed with tear gas, batons, shields and guns firing rubber bullets.

The labour minister went on saying that he had consulted his private lawyers in order to lodge defamation charges against former Democrat MP Suthep for accusing Thaksin Shinawatra of aspiring to become president of Thailand.

Regarding the Constitution Court’s judgement on the draft constitutional amendment, Chalerm said he rejected the ruling as a symbol of protest.

He said he found the court’s reasoning that selection of senators was better than election of senators as shameful.

Calerm must have been on the sauce when he made that statement. I wish he would have clarified how these items tear gas, batons, shields and guns firing rubber bullets are not weapons.

A previous incarnation of this government managed to sever limbs of protesters with well-aimed tear gas cannisters. Long since forgotten by our bleeding heart red apologists.

One day he is in charge of security, the next day he is just labour minister, and the next day he is in charge of security again.

I had to stop reading the article, it is just full of rampant hypocrisy. I used to think Chalerm was funny, but he has become beyond tiresome.

When the Dems get back in, the likes of Chalerm, Tarit and a handful of others had better be dealt with in an expeditious fashion and locked up for a long time.

If the police are "strictly instructed not to carry any weapons at the protest sites", how come the protest-guards were able to detain an armed plain-clothes without-any-ID policeman at the site, last week ?

Perhaps former-DPM Labour-Minister Chalerm should investigate, and report back with appropriate excuses, within 90-days ?

The man has made his fortune, as lackey to the most corrupte of the Thai governments, over the past few decades, his assisment of who will/can be charged with sedition, most likely comes from charges that can/could have been filed against him during his various public speeches/press releases, and actions in the past. In most other countries a government that behaved like this one would have stepped down a long time ago therefore avoiding such public intervention as we see going on right now

They either need to step down or call early elections before this really gets out of hand - denial and lies isn't working any more.

What Suthep said on stage last night to Chalerm about arresting him was "bring your mum and dad with you" guess he was inferring that he would need some backup. He also invited Chalerm to join him on stage.

But off course that would pass right over the top of Chalerm or in one ear out and out the other - nothing in there to stop it.
