Leaving Thailand on an ED visa

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Have known of this site for a while, and finally joined up as I have some questions about my ED visa.

I will begin a term at a Bangkok university (Thammasat for those familiar) in January and would like to leave the country a few times (Burma, Laos, Cambodia).

Disappointingly, there is no such thing as a multiple entry education visa according to the embassy.

Is the best course of action a 90 day ED visa with a subsequent extension and to then purchase a 'multiple re-entry permit' once I am on the ground?

Any info. on this permit? Mainly, is it a hassle or a quick in at out? I know it is 3,800 baht.

Thanks in advance,

S

A single entry permit is 1000 baht, a multiple is 3800 baht. The re-entry permit will only keep your current permission to stay valid, it won't last forever. So, if you have to go to immigration every 90 days with the paperwork from the school you will only get permission to stay stamps for the next 90 day period. You need to manage the purchase and type of permit that you buy to coincide with your travel plans during the next 90 day period to "save" money.

You must fill out a TM8 form with pictures and get in line at immigration. How long it takes,Depends on the day and how busy they are at C, as there are separate lines for each transaction.. Mondays and Fridays are the worst.

OP will probably get a one year extension because he will studying at a university. So a multiple re-entry permit is an option.

Thanks for the answers so far.

Dumb question maybe, but a 90-day single entry ED Visa is valid for 90 days. I read somewhere it is valid 90 days once received. Is this true or is it valid 90 days once you enter?

You must enter Thailand within 90 days from the date that it is issued. When you enter Thailand you will get 90 days permission to stay even if you enter on the 89th day after the visa is issued.

First 90 days is how long the visa is valid. The visa will have a "must enter"by date stamped/printed on it. That is the expiration date of the visa. It's just a ticket to enter Thailand.

Second 90 days is the number of days that you are allowed to stay once you enter. When you enter you will get 90 days permission to stay.

On or before the permission to stay date you must either leave Thailand, or go to immigration with the proper paperwork and apply for an extension. In your case you will get a 1 year extension and only have to report your address every 90 days but not leave the country. There's another 90 days!!
