As I understand it there is no maximum fine for overstay, you may risk arrest and will be charged $10 (US) per day for the total time you have overstayed, much more expensive than Thailand for a long overstay.

If not on overstay it is possible to get an extension for $2 a day. In same subject as extension it mentions the overstay fee of $10 a day. See: http://www.tourismlaos.org/show.php?Cont_ID=35
