The all-new Range Rover Sport is now being offered in Thailand with prices ranging from Bt7.75 million to Bt10.05 million for the SDV6 3.0 diesel and LR-V8 5.0 supercharged engine variants respectively.

The new Range Rover boasts an all-aluminium platform and body, which help lower its weight by as much as 420kg and thus improves fuel economy, while maintaining super car performance. It is targeted at a younger group of buyers than the regular Range Rover model.

Acceleration from 0-100km/h is claimed to be 5.3 seconds for the V8 model, which has a 510hp powerplant with 625Nm of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The top speed is claimed to be 250km/h, putting it in the same level as the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 4.4. Meanwhile, the turbocharged diesel engine produces 292hp and 600Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from rest to100m/h in 7.2 seconds. Average fuel economy is claimed at 13.8 litres/100km for the supercharged version (CO2 321g/km) and 7.9 litres/100km for the diesel (CO2 206g/km).

The Range Rover Sport features a new four-corner air suspension system and a Terrain Response 2 Auto 4WD system that monitors the current driving condition and automatically selects the most suitable terrain programme. A torque vectoring system helps improve cornering stability, while parking is made easy with the park assist system that features automated manoeuvres for perpendicular, parallel and park exit. The front seats come with a massage function, while the third-row seats could be folded and unfolded electrically, providing room for seven occupants in total.

Sanpong Chuenroj, managing director of official distributor City Automobiles, said the company will launch the new model at the Thailand International Motor Expo, which starts this weekend. It will come with a 3-year warranty, as well as 24-hour roadside assistance and optional gold packages for customers.

"We plan to invest Bt150 million next year to launch a new showroom and service centre," he said, adding that the company plans to launch a new model every year.

City Automobiles presently has showrooms and service centres on Wireless Road and Rama III Road, while the new facility will be built on Rama IV Road and officially opened in the third quarter of next year.

I just hope I never rear-end one...I don't know if I have enough insurance cover for these types of vehicles!

The laws here have claims for 3rd party damage capped at 1 million baht, they should have their own 1st class insurance if their vehicle is worth more.

They depreciate terribly. I'd go Porsche Cayenne diesel over any of those range rovers, even the supercharged sport.

Do you have some quotable figures to back that ?

Range Rover sport is basically 10 million on road new.

The one linked is a 2006 supercharged sport. 2.6 million from a dealer.

No thanks. That's near a million a year depreciation.

The Range Rover in that link is an evoque. A much cheaper model then the range rover sport to begin with.

..as Rolls Royce salesmen used to say. "If you have to ask you can't afford it".

Don't want one don't buy one , but at that level price is not the issue.

I hope you are correct...I would hate to see them come after me personally (either "informally" or through the courts) if I was in an accident with any of the many super-cars one sees on Thai roads!

The Evoque is not a Range Rover Sport.

Yes correct, but that has already been mentioned above, so why not find a price on one2car for a sport and post it. (as the sport is a higher model as everyone has said that would put it on par for depreciation with the Cayenne making the depreciation argument a mute point.

Why not? Because it's a different model, that's why not. And the point would be moot, not mute.

Not a sport - but a 2004 Vogue was priced at 4.4 MB in 2006 (thats 50% depreciation in 2 years - at the time they were 8.8 MB new).

The Full Warranty was 5 years.

If in two years the new shaped Sport for 4.4 MB, it'd be a good buy (relatively)... I'll be 'on it like car bonnet'...

So now that they are not grey market imports what is the price of the Evoque, I guess I could ring Sanpong as this new delearship is one of ours as well but you seem to have the knowledge.

If I'm not mistaken (and I could be) a year ago the Evoques from the Land Rover Dealerships were about 5MB for the SD4 (Diesel) and about 5.6MB for the SI4 (Petrol). Both with a 3 year warranty.

I never really paid much attention to the price of the Dealership Evoques as I realised quickly that they were so much more than the Grey Market imports.

The Grey market SD4 was between 3.85MB and 4.4MB depending on importer and length of warranty they issues (1 or 2 years).

When I saw one the other day my first reaction was: "I bet they're a bugger for spares!".

Spares will not be an issue.

Not while the model is current, right. Needing a repair when you're 1,000KM from Bangkok will be a problem though ;)

You under estimate the support network behind the company.

Interesting news. My wife's Evoque is almost 2 years old now, and we sure haven't been advised of any places outside of BKK where we can get it serviced...

A repair outside of Bangkok is a whole lot different than a service.

Who did you buy the vehicle from ?

Ours was one of the first official imports back when British Motors was handling the brand (and back when you could get an official gasoline model). City Motors (new importer) doesn't seem to be any better though. Anyways, no big deal for the Evoque - it never gets out of BKK anyway, and so far no issues, but for my next SUV servicing will matter, as I want something I can drive to, and use around, our houses in Ubon and Chiangmai.

The lack of City Motors service centers doesn't cut it for that, so the Sport is out for now. Right now, it looks like the Benz GL350 is for me, but will wait for it to drop another 1.5-2M baht in 2016... Maybe by then City Motors will have a bigger dealer network? *shrug*
