webfact
Thai tourism doomed by political turmoilBy English NewsBANGKOK, Nov 28 – Thailand’s tourism will be battered by the current political unrest with a predicted decline by 10 per cent in the final quarter of the year, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT).TCT president Piyamarn Techapaiboon said foreign tourists are bypassing Bangkok and travelling directly to resort towns such as Pattaya and Phuket and many of them will possibly delay their trips to Thailand if the political situation remains tense. She said the protesters’ seizures of government complexes have also affected businesses catering to seminar groups which have to be postponed.Kasian Watanachaopisut, Thai-Chinese Tourism Alliance Association president, said Chinese tourists have delayed their trips to Thailand to avoid political violence but most tour groups continued with their original schedules. Some of their travel routes have been adjusted such as taking boats instead of buses to the Emerald Buddha Temple, he said.He said about 300,000 Chinese tourists should have visited Thailand this month, a drop by 40,000-50,000 persons from the same month of last year, while the number should rise to 500,000 people next month.Chinese visitors to Thailand should reach at least four million people this year, he said, adding that the slight drop was due to restrictions in China, not the political unrest. Popular Post useronthenet
No surprise to find figures will of course drop if this demonstration continues. However, if the they continue to disrupt the country further, then things will of course take an unfortunate twist. Hopefully the opposition will have the sense to fight another day at the ballot box, not like this.
Popular Post Rob8891
Whilst I accept that tourism is a big earner for Thailand (especially with the rice stocks rotting away in storage) this announcement is much more about 'face' than any real concerns. No mention of the effect of rampant corruption on people's lives, no mention of its drain on the economy.....just "we must not look bad to the falang sheep tourists who queue up to be fleeced". Maybe, just maybe if some of the cancer that is corruption and the Shin Clan's greed are wiped away, tourism will be all smiles again?? 500,000 Chinese?? Chiang Mai is swamped as it is!
Popular Post noitom
Nonsense. Thai tourism is driven by the sex trade. When the newspaper and TAT start analyzing the Thai tourism industry honestly, to include the sex trade, then they can be taken seriously. The sex grade bolsters the Thai black economy like nothing else. Hats off to the girls , the backbone of the Thai economy.

chainarong
I think the last thing on the minds of people concerned with the management of Thailand is tourism, since the inception of the Thai love Thai through to PTP the administration has been sub-standard, has no direction , policy on the run, no firm commitment to a better Thailand, if it wasn't for the solid performing business sector, Thailand would have been a basket case long ago.

Gummigalgen
Suthep seems to enjoy his role as old-timer rebel and a monk posed behind him on the screen. On average a farang guy spends € 100 per day in the local economy. His average length of stay is around 15 days. On average a Chinese man spends € 12 a day in the local economy, anything else is paid for in China with the package tour. The average length of stay of same man is 6 days. Do the sums Well, of course with the latter group there is much more squeeze to divide. The first group? Only a little bit of squeeze. Why is it the powers to be want more Chinese visitors?

These days it is a small part of the tourism industry. Just look at the number of single female tourists and couples (I really don't think they're here for the go-go bars) and the number of night spots that have little or nothing to so with so-called "sex tourism". I think the domestic "sex industry" now dwarfs its tourist oriented counterpart by a long shot.
