Train derails near Lamphun station

BANGKOK: -- The first official train leaving for the north from Bangkok to test the finished northern rail line derailed near Lamphun railway station this morning.

The train carried top executives of the State Railway of Thailand who included the governor Prapat Chongsa-nguan.

It was not immediately known what caused the derailment of the last bogie of the train but there was no injury.

The train was launched from Hua Lampong to Chiang Mai to test the safety of the train service on this northern route after it was closed for maintenance and repair for over two months.

It started the commemorative trip this morning on the way to Chiang Mai.

The governor has earlier said he would resign if there was another derailment on the route which was maintained and repaired.

Somebody better be there to take pictures of their nervous faces the next time these officials board a train to prove how safe it is.

I'm assuming the Railroad Puiyai will head back home in their chauffeured BMW's and Mercedes' with police escort. They should be coming down Thapae Road any minute now.

Road accidents are possible; derailments are a guarantee; loss of face -- priceless! rolleyes.gif
