Thai protesters vow to keep up fight despite election plan



BANGKOK, December 9, 2013 (AFP) - Thai anti-government protesters vowed Monday to keep up their fight to overthrow Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra despite her decision to call an election to try to end the kingdom's political crisis.

Protesters abandon Government Complex

BANGKOK: -- All protesters at Government Complex joined a mass procession heading to Government House at 8:30 am, Thai PBS reported.

The station said none of protesters were left behind to guard the stage there.

It said about 50 vehicles joined the procession.

The procession was led by Suthep Thaugsuban, the secretary-general of the People's Democratic Reform Committee.

The procession had a group of motorcyclists lead the way.

Thai PBS reported that people along the way joined the procession as it passed them.

Envoys' trip to Government House cancelled

BANGKOK: -- Foreign Ministry on Monday cancelled a trip of foreign diplomats to the Government House to observe security arrangement as some protesters already arrived.

Protest leaders say demonstrators continue to head to Government House despite House dissolution

BANGKOK: -- Protest leaders said on TVs that the protests would continue the simultaneous marches to the Government House although the House has been dissolved.

Thai PBS reported quoting the traffic police command as saying that about 50 groups of protesters were heading to the Government House.

The traffic police warned that there would be traffic snarls on 24 main roads, including Sukhumvit and Chaeng Wattana.

Protesters besiege Government House

BANGKOK: -- Protesters besieged Government House Monday morning, prompting the government to cancel its plan to invite foreign diplomats to observe the situation there.

Several TV channels reported that many groups of protesters have reached the wall of Government House and were waiting there for the main procession from Government Complex led by Suthep Thaugsuban to join them.

They were waiting outside without making efforts to break into the compound.

65 schools in 15 districts

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration announced that its 65 schools in 15 districts were closed on Monday.


The BMA may consider close more schools if they are affected by protests, Thai PBS reported.

PHUKET: -- Three foreigners have been arrested in Bangkok after they allegedly robbed an ATM in Patong last week, opening it with a cutting torch and escaping with B200,000.
