It seems we might have to spend Christmas with my wife's parents who live in a small village east of Nakhon Ratchasima.

So I'm thinking about booking a hotel in the city for Christmas night.

Can anybody please recommend a hotel near whatever there is in town worth seeing, and also a restaurant where I can get a traditional English style Christmas dinner (near the hotel). Preferably a place which also does a reasonably priced Thai food menu, in case the parents tag along. An English Christmas dinner is likely to be pricey - and of course they wouldn't enjoy it!

It's funny you say that because I once had hosted a dinner in a restaurant to celebrate the engagement of a couple of farang friends. The split was about 50/50 between Thai and farang.

All of the farang ate Thai food, and all of the Thais ate farang food!

For lodging I suggest the Kwanruen Resort - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g469414-d4007109-Reviews-Kwanruen_Resort-Nakhon_Ratchasima_Nakhon_Ratchasima_Province.html

It is across the street from a very nice lake that offers great scenery and a very nice black topped 3k running/walking trail that circles the lake. There is also a separate black topped bike path that runs parallel to the running/walking trail.

If you have the time and transportation, I also suggest a visit to Jim Thompson Farm. It is only open from mid December to mid January for visitors each year, and if you goggle Jim Thompson, I think you will find his story to be an interesting one.

Thanks for all your advice.

I think I've found an OK hotel, however, I am still looking for somewhere to eat Christmas dinner so I welcome any more ideas please.

I've checked Chez Andy and although his Christmas menu looks good it isn't the 'English style' (Turkey, roast potatoes etc.) traditional feast I was hoping to find.

Maybe such a menu doesn't exist in a restaurant in Korat! I've spent no time in the city before and have no idea of the ex-pat scene there.

Chicog: believe me, this is one Thai family who don't appreciate Farrang food! A few years back I cooked a full traditional Christmas dinner, turkey, ham, roast spuds etc., and it turned-out really good. But they didn't like it, apart from the ham - which they ate with rice & spicy sauce! (can't cook this year as we're away from home).

Thanks for your help & info SpokaneAl.

Sorry not to have replied before now, but I'm still in 'the village'(groan!)and my internet access has been very erratic. With a reduced sentence due to good behaviour, I'm hoping to be allowed home tomorrow.

Sadly I missed the helpful link with the info about the menu at The George & Dragon, which sounded just right!

We ended up staying at the Punjadara Hotel, which was fine apart from the rock hard beds! We ate both nights at a nice Thai

restaurant along the river / moat.

No Christmas dinner of course, but we did enjoy the food.

Thanks again and wishing you all a happy new year.
