samsingsong Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 It seems we might have to spend Christmas with my wife's parents who live in a small village east of Nakhon Ratchasima. So I'm thinking about booking a hotel in the city for Christmas night. Can anybody please recommend a hotel near whatever there is in town worth seeing, and also a restaurant where I can get a traditional English style Christmas dinner (near the hotel). Preferably a place which also does a reasonably priced Thai food menu, in case the parents tag along. An English Christmas dinner is likely to be pricey - and of course they wouldn't enjoy it!
Chicog Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 It's funny you say that because I once had hosted a dinner in a restaurant to celebrate the engagement of a couple of farang friends. The split was about 50/50 between Thai and farang. All of the farang ate Thai food, and all of the Thais ate farang food!
SpokaneAl Posted December 12, 2013 Posted December 12, 2013 You may want to check out the Chez Andy Swiss Restaurant and Steak House - https://www.facebook.com/andykorat

SpokaneAl Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 For lodging I suggest the Kwanruen Resort - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g469414-d4007109-Reviews-Kwanruen_Resort-Nakhon_Ratchasima_Nakhon_Ratchasima_Province.html It is across the street from a very nice lake that offers great scenery and a very nice black topped 3k running/walking trail that circles the lake. There is also a separate black topped bike path that runs parallel to the running/walking trail. If you have the time and transportation, I also suggest a visit to Jim Thompson Farm. It is only open from mid December to mid January for visitors each year, and if you goggle Jim Thompson, I think you will find his story to be an interesting one.
meatboy Posted December 13, 2013 Posted December 13, 2013 op you got to be joking this T.I.T.farang xmas dinner and serving thai food aswell.last yr.the sportsbar done a fantastic turkey dinner, as the farang is no longer there you might give korat chef a buz and ask him if he is doing a sread this yr.or try the check inn,or gary who was at the sportsbar i think he is know at the freindship bar.try asking in the issaan forum.as you mentioned thai food my wife's family are coming to our house this yr.for yep turkey and the rest.
samsingsong Posted December 21, 2013 Author Posted December 21, 2013 Thanks for all your advice. I think I've found an OK hotel, however, I am still looking for somewhere to eat Christmas dinner so I welcome any more ideas please. I've checked Chez Andy and although his Christmas menu looks good it isn't the 'English style' (Turkey, roast potatoes etc.) traditional feast I was hoping to find. Maybe such a menu doesn't exist in a restaurant in Korat! I've spent no time in the city before and have no idea of the ex-pat scene there. Chicog: believe me, this is one Thai family who don't appreciate Farrang food! A few years back I cooked a full traditional Christmas dinner, turkey, ham, roast spuds etc., and it turned-out really good. But they didn't like it, apart from the ham - which they ate with rice & spicy sauce! (can't cook this year as we're away from home). 1
smokie36 Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 Chez Andy relocated from Samui....his food I can also highly recommend.
SpokaneAl Posted December 22, 2013 Posted December 22, 2013 I asked your question on another forum and here is the link with the responses. http://koratfart.com/general-discussions/korat-christmas-8536/msg30569/?topicseen;PHPSESSID=7d729f526a1c78634eed49987f4c44cd#msg30569.
samsingsong Posted January 4, 2014 Author Posted January 4, 2014 Thanks for your help & info SpokaneAl. Sorry not to have replied before now, but I'm still in 'the village'(groan!)and my internet access has been very erratic. With a reduced sentence due to good behaviour, I'm hoping to be allowed home tomorrow. Sadly I missed the helpful link with the info about the menu at The George & Dragon, which sounded just right! We ended up staying at the Punjadara Hotel, which was fine apart from the rock hard beds! We ate both nights at a nice Thai restaurant along the river / moat. No Christmas dinner of course, but we did enjoy the food. Thanks again and wishing you all a happy new year. 1
