British passport renewal, to be online or not.

Criteria chosen by FCO as to paper application verses online application.

https://www.gov.uk/government/world-location-news/changes-to-british-passport-services-in-thailand

This important change follows reviews by the National Audit Office and is designed to achieve economies of scale, greater security and consistency in decision making.

Countries in this region that can apply online:

Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia.

Countries in this region that require paper application:

Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, China, Burma.

I was wondering why all countries are not online.

HMG are supposed to be committed to conserving natural resources, really a great help to that objective is for coloured copies of all 32 or 48 pages of each passport to be sent with each paper application.

Common sense dictates renewal applications should be done on line by all means make people jump through hoops with their first application for a PP but once in the system and provided no significant changes to your details it really should just be a case of sending new photos and paying......banks use secure on line systems for on line banking why can't the passport office do something similar

I am waiting for the Orwellian day that they start requiring finger prints and a DNA sample for your pp application

It's interesting to note that whilst countries like Malaysia can complete the process online, they still have to pay the overseas surcharge, as well as the courier fee, for what is probably little more than an automated process, difficult to justify in my view, though I'm sure they will have an excuse.

@notarf, whilst your link is helpful I couldn't see where it advises of the criteria the FCO uses to decide what countries have to supply a tree and which countries residents can apply online.

The only difference I can see is doing the application on line verses downloading it and then filling it out. You can though pay for it online. It still requires sending supporting documents and passport to the UK.
