Available houses for rent -VS- available condos for rent: Ratio of 1:10

Just complaining...

We all know why is that, but when you're getting crazy in your tiny little condo with noisy neighbors next to you, plus smoking neighbors above you who stay all day long on their balcony having smokes after smokes YOU CAN'T EVEN OPEN YOUR OWN WINDOWS it's a real nightmare!

So at some point you decide that enough is enough and you start looking for an independent house to rent. Unfortunately there are so few of them... and the very few that are actually available for rent, are in a horrible Thai Style with outrageously hideous mix of colors, no AC in the main living room (even for the expensive ones at 25k+/month) and some with cockroaches cohabiting.

The ratio of 1:10 can be observed on any agency listing... and confirmed by driving around yourself.

If only foreigners could buy land, this would completely reverse the situation.

Yes of course there are thousands of houses, but on the other side there are millions of condos, so how many of the houses are actually available for rent, today? Not much.

Yes, there seem to be much condos for rent in Pattaya, and fewer houses.

I thought about it for some time now. And I think cracked the mystery!

Condos take up a bit of land, but, here's the tricky part, condos have several floors, sometimes 25 and even more. Condos fit many many units inside one tall building.

House takes up some land, but usually house is a single family unit.

That may explain why there are more condos availabe to rent, and fewer houses.

Not only the rental market. I have been looking for a small house to buy for my wife and there is very little available at the lower end of the market. The few current housing developments all seem to be pretty much sold out.

Look around nong pra lai ,there are masses of houses to rent at all prices ,i must admit though when we were looking 8 years ago ,i was amazed at the state of most of them ,dirty and smelly ,how in Gods name to people expect to rent out their property in that state?

After a half day of riding around on the bike, we had ~10 houses to choose from.

He rented a nice house for 9000 Baht at "Golden Hill Village"

2 bedroom/toilets, 1living room, 3 AC and a decent kitchen...

BUT: you have to move your ass and driving around....Internet classifieds are mostly crap and (usually) no option!

If you drive around looking for gated and guarded villages, and drive through those villages, the houses for rent usually have signs or banners outside advertising they are for rent, and usually with a mobile number.

I found my house this way. When I moved in, I was the 1st to live there. Fully furnished to reasonably high spec. Couldn't be happier.

9000...there`s still hope then .I agree that your own legwork is more important than anything else.Have plenty of experiences with classifieds and agencies,but their info is most often outdatet or you get quoted an higher price if you show some interest.

Beach needs to be no less than 2 minutes away, of slow, dizzy sleepy walk. Any longer than that, forget it... I shall go back to sleep, and wake up around 5pm or so. Pattaya is so much nicer after sun down.

It's not really a requirement, as most of the houses are located there anyway! It's like saying "only requirement: to have a kitchen"... most houses have a kitchen, if not all.

3 AC for less than 10k baht/month is indeed pretty good for 2013.

I'll send a PM, but don't think any are available now. Best bet is to speak with the manager and leave your number so he can call when one opens up. Many of the houses have pools, so the prices would be quite a bit more for those.

Another village down the road is Baramie (spelling?). I have friends who live there and it looks quite nice. It's south of the Ambassador. So unless you have your own transport, it's a bit far.

Have you been to the east side? Plenty of land available there...I mean.. PLENTY of flat, unused land. This land could host more houses than there are condos in Pattaya. This is to say that, land is not a problem here, it is however in big cities, but not here where you can just go 3-6Km away and have lots of free land.

I think there are much more old/crappy/townhouses than there are new/excellent/detached-houses available, and that was my point. Also in many areas of Europe for example there much more houses than condos (only in big cities it'd be the opposite). In Thailand, one would have to be totally blind to NOT see that most condos are designed, built, bought, for and by foreigners, making it easy to rent one, while houses are designed, built and bought by Thais, and you would have to be totally bind to NOT see that it's because of the law forbidding foreigners to own land.

Pattaya is a resort town, only an idiot would hope there be more houses than condo's in sea side resort town.

For me "furnished" means "furnished": beds, linens sheets, tables, chairs, coach, thick curtains, privacy white curtains, fridge, washing machine, TV, internet, glasses, cups, spoons, forks, knives, cleaning brushes etc.

Whoever sold you a "furnished" house with anything less than that, then you got screwed!

This is what you get when you rent a "furnished condo", so why should it be different for a house?

I've done 3 month stays in BKK and Patts in what are effectively just hotel rooms (not what I consider an 'apartment', but the Thais seem to lump them all together) and I've been pleasantly surprised by the lack of noise from my neighbours. I can only conclude that the insulation in these apartment blocks is better than most of the joints I've had in Oz. By contrast, I stayed with an ex-GF in an all-Thai block for a couple of nights and people were partying loudly next door, banging on our door and generally acting like complete tools. Methinks its worth paying the extra rent to ensure that you arent jammed in with young Thais hellbent on partying - even then I dont recall any smoke wafting into her room.}
