How much should I expect to pay for 24 hour scooter rental on Koh Phangan? Does the price vary much from place to place.....eg koh lanta, Krabi etc........Thank You

Should cost you around 150 baht a day for a basic 125 scooter though you can get a discount at most places if you are taking it for a number of days, especially now as I think its low season there.

I'm not definate about the cost on Krabi or Lanta but I imagine pretty much the same.

Drive carefully wherever you are, they make a ton of extra cash at these places from scooter repair costs because some farang has got a bit too overconfident or drunk when driving and crashed the bike.

you can get them for 100 baht a day everywhere in thong sala easy peasy

I'm guessing you could arrange some sort of decent discount for renting one for 6 months?

Will I need to bring my UK driving license to rent one?

no license but they will take your passport as a deposit. If you are renting it for a long period of time then you will need to negotiate with the owner.

This is one of those strange and odd things in Thailand.

What about the obligation to carry your passport with you (police) in Thailand?

I did this only once and never again; that was on Samui btw; the farang co-owner of the bike rental shop put it in his (cloth) bag and drove of with a lightning speed....I wondered what would happen if he had an accident... :o

In my country the passport is considered to be 'owned' by the government and never to be given away, whatever the reason.

I will never ever give my passport away anymore!

I had a bad experience in Egypt some years ago, I had to give my passport to the hotel owners (and we ain't talking 5 star here) and it became 'lost' for several days. A most worrying time until they finally 'found' it. I did of course have to extend my stay in the hotel by several days, it was quite profitable for them losing my passport like that.

They take your passport to guarantee you will pay after crashing the bike. Considering how many people crash their motorbikes and then don't feel the need to pay the damages, I understand their reasoning. That said, if you don't want to leave the passport then offer to leave a substantial deposit, at least 2000 baht. Otherwise, they probably won't rent the bike out.

For a long term rental, I would pay the month in advance, plus a deposit.

I agree. 2K Baht is 'nothing' compared to the value of a passport.

Everyone, willing to rent a bike or car, can 'loose' 2K Baht...but a passport :o ???

another word to the wise, if you do crash, take it to the guy you rented from rather than trying to have it fixed on the cheap somwhere else. The second shop will simply call the owner and let them know you messed up.

Then they will extort you sensless, one person charging you for the repair and the second claiming it is substandard and charging again you to do it properly.

i always give them a cancelled passport, though i cant remeber the last time i was asked to leave anything as deposit.

bkkmadness, they're not that STUPID, they clip holes in a Danish passport when it's cancelled, and I don't know of any country that wouldn't doe this or similar. BUT if they were that back-words, then I'd do that my self. Nr.1, I'd have a drivers licence to give OR 2K is the best-way, thats what the guy asked for when I was there in-Samui- 2000, but as you, never been asked since (maybe he remebers me) and not from 6 years back, but the following year etc.-AND ALWAYS CHECK-OUT THE BIKES CONDITION, since some have told me about a scratch in the paint they had to pay for, etc. etc, which they had nothing to do with, since it was that way when they rented said bike..and wear a helmet, when (at least) in traffic...SO many wish they had. Right Madness?....AND THE REST OF YOu..

Hi,

Could you recommend me please a fair bikerenter (who don't want my passport) in Koh Phangan (chaloklum)?

Thanks

When and how long for? I have a friend who has half a dozen old scooters he rents out of his restaurant, he won't require a passport.
