Yingluck Returns As No. 1 Pheu Thai Party List

BANGKOK: -- Pheu Thai Party has placed Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra as the prime candidate for their party list for the next general election.

Ms. Yingluck, who is currently serving as caretaker Prime Minister, has previously refused to confirm to the press whether she will run for Pheu Thai Party as she did in the 2011 election.

Anti-government protesters, led by People’s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD), have rejected Ms. Yingluck call for the new poll, scheduled to be held on 2 February 2014. PCAD leaders have demanded that an unelected ‘People’s Assembly’ be established to “reform” Thai politics before any election is allowed to take place.

The call to boycott the 2014 election had been endorsed by the Democrat Party.

PCAD protesters have also been besieging the Thai-Japan Stadium in Bangkok, the designated venue for election registration, in order to prevent political parties from filing their application.

Some protesters also set up checkpoints around the venue and searched media vehicles.

Nevertheless, representatives of many parties, including Pheu Thai Party, and members of the press managed to slip inside the Stadium at around 03.00 when many protesters were sleeping. In a surreal scene, many candidates had to tread over the protesters’ bodies to enter the venue.

Phuea Thai Party, represented by Mr. Taweesak Anakphan and Mr. Ekthanat Intrrod, reportedly entered the building even before 03.00 and had successfully submitted their candidates’ information.

Top officials of Pheu Thai Party, such as Mr. Jarupong Ruangsuwan, the chairman of the party, Mr. Prompong Nopparit, Mr. Poomtham Vechyachai, and Mr. Sompong Amornwiwat were monitoring the situation near the registration venue.

They eventually decided to assign their representatives to process the application instead of entering the venue themselves after they learned about the difficulty in accessing the building.

Pheu Thai Party List is arranged as followed:

2. Mr. Somchai Wongsawat
3. Mr. Jarupong Ruangsuwan
4. Mr. Surapong Tovichakchaikul
5. Mr. Chaikasem Nitisiri

8. Mr. Pracha Promnok
9. Mr. Phongthep Thepkanjana
10. Mr. Plodprasop Suraswadi
11. Mr. Phokin Phalakul
12. Mr. Sompong Amornvivat

Further list of Pheu Thai Party’s candidates is not immediately available.

Other smaller political parties also filed their application for the election, such as Bhumjaithai Party, Chart Samakkee Party, Rak Thailand Party, Thai Maha Pattana Party, and Democratic Party (not to be confused with the Democrat Party, the main opposition party which boycotts the election).

Additionally, representatives of some political parties later filed complaints at Dindaeng Police Station that the protesters attempted to prevent them from entering the Thai-Japanese Stadium; obstructing or disrupting the election process is criminalised under the Thai laws.

And then there's Yingluck - the darling of Isaan - who will finally venture out of the wilderness next week, and bravely settle in - Chiang Mai ! It's the " Catch me if you Can " election !

Yes they have just registred for an election! But if they had listened a little to the sentiment amongst some of the Thais, it is very arrogant to put familymembers at #1, #2 and #4. That Yingluck tops the list is OK, as she clearly is their candidate for the PM-post, but if they were a little smart (dare I say humble?), they should have placed familymembers at lower numbers, not to rub it in the face of their opponents.

It is not like #24 or #39 on the list is not going to be elected!!

I keep reading "reform before election" but nobody has explained what exactly that means.

BANGKOK: -- POLITICIANS LINKED to the red shirts and others in the ruling Pheu Thai Party have opposed its nomination of Yingluck Shinawatra as its number 1 candidate to be the next prime minister, according to party sources.

Pheu Thai red-shirt politicians are worried that a candidate from the Shinawatra family, which has come under heavy criticism in the ongoing political crisis, would give the party's political enemies an edge, the sources said. "The opposite side is trying to corner the government. If Pheu Thai still nominates people from the Shinawatra family [for the party-list election], the government's enemies will have an advantage," a source said.

Pheu Thai has revealed its party-list candidates for the February 2 election, with Yingluck, the caretaker prime minister and defence minister, at number 1 and former premier Somchai Wongsawat number 2. Somchai's wife Yaowapa is also from the Shinawatra family.

Red-shirt politicians suggested that to help reduce the pressure Pheu Thai is facing, politicians with a good image, such as Phongthep Thepkanjana and Chadchart Sittipunt, should become the party's number top candidates to be the next prime minister, the source said.

The source said that according to the caretaker PM's proposal, a post-election government should implement political reform for one and a half to two years before dissolving the House and calling a new election. "The new government should be an ad-hoc one and there should be no one from the Shinawatra family in the Cabinet," the source said.

However, Pheu Thai had still nominated Yingluck and Somchai as its top two candidates for the premiership. This disappointed red-shirt politicians who have threatened to withdraw support for the party, the sources said.

Meanwhile, opposition politicians said yesterday that Pheu Thai may viewed Yingluck as its best candidate.

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Yingluck have been criticised by many residents in Bangkok after the House passed the controversial amnesty bill aimed at absolving politicians convicted of corruption and perpetrators of severe crimes such as murder and arson. However, it was believed that the Shinawatras were still popular in rural areas.

Democrat spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut said Pheu Thai may believe that the Shinawatra family represents a strong chance for the party. That was why Pheu Thai would field Yingluck again to be prime minister again. He said that in the run-up to the election, the Democrats would not campaign against the so-called Thaksin regime.

"My party will hold a political reform forum to try to create the future for Thailand that everybody wants to see," he said.

Deputy Democrat spokesman Jurit Laksanawisit said yesterday that Pheu Thai's nomination of Yingluck as its No 1 party-list candidate suggested it wanted to extend the Thaksin regime.

He said there was no guarantee Yingluck and other Pheu Thai politicians would not attempt to revive the controversial amnesty bill if they took power again. He said Yingluck had to pass the law to "whitewash" Thaksin's wrongdoing.

"Thai politics is going back to a period of 'Thaksin orders and Yingluck does it'. This is a big problem for Thais," Jurit said.

They have registered as party list candidates, a system which enables both nepotism and cronyism, as ably demonstrated, and allows the wealthy to buy MP seats and power without electorate scrutiny. It should have no place in democracy.
