BMA opens Piyaphirom Park as New Year's gift to the people of Bangkok

BANGKOK, 25 December 2013 (NNT) — The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has officially opened Piyaphirom Park for Bangkok residents. The park, which is aimed to add more greenery to the capital, is the BMA’s New Year’s gift to the people of Bangkok.

Governor of Bangkok M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra presided over the opening ceremony for Piyaphirom Park located on Srinakharin Road at Krungthep Kreetha intersection. The park covers 12 rai of land and is aimed at making Bangkok a cleaner and greener city.

The governor stated that he was honored to be chairing the opening ceremony of the park, as the area usually plays host to a number of leisurely activities for city dwellers. M.R. Sukhumbhand also pointed out that the BMA is working towards transforming Bangkok into a “green metropolitan”, and is doing so by adding more parks to the city.

The governor bestowed the name “Piyaphirom” to the park, which is a combination of 2 words. “Piya” stems from the last two syllables in the name of the district which is home to a number of local Muslims, and “Phirom” means lovingly or happy.

M.R. Sukhumbhand thanked all who were involved and made the opening of the park possible - adding a special thanks to those who had donated money to the construction of the park.
