BANGKOK, Jan 1 – Thailand will be spared from power blackouts during the 15 days of suspended supply of natural gas from Myanmar, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) asserted today.

Suthon Boonprasong, EGAT deputy governor for the transmission system, said the maintenance of a natural gas platform in the neighbouring country between December 31 and January 14 will affect power generating at six plants in western Thailand.

The plants will be short of natural gas by 1,100 million cubic feet per day, equivalent to 3,000 megawatts of electricity from the total production of 33,000 megawatts, he said.

He said EGAT will substitute natural gas with 111.30 million litres of bunker oil and 10.7 million litres of diesel oil, giving assurances that the reserved oil is sufficient for 20 days.

He said the decreasing temperature has contributed to slightly higher consumption of power but it should not exceed 23,000 megawatts.

Mr Suthon said EGAT has cooperated with the public and private sectors in closely monitoring power generating system nationwide to ensure adequate supply but called on people to save energy. (MCOT online news)

Didn't we have this same story last year?

Yes.

Thailand is an energy importer. Unless you can offer alternative energy supply solutions, these types of events are guaranteed to occur every year. The difference is that the shortage was planned and sufficient replacement supplies obtained.

Yes, I get that. Just don't see how this rates as news.

Yes, this is an annual maintenance item. This story will occur every year, same as many other stories that happen every year at approximately the same time.

It's intimidation and mind-screwing-the-tax-payers tactic by the government agencies.

Then it's not newsworthy. It's pointless.

Not really newsworthy, but it does remind people that Thailand has to import resources. The Kingdom has often tried to reduce energy usage.

I think the main reason it's in the news now is to announce that they do not anticipate any problems because last year there was talk of possible problems.

Those 15 days last year were marked by a consistent power supply at home. Now if they could just do that all year

anything is good to drive up the price year by year

Nope anything is good to increase panic, intimidation and blame on the taxpayers...
