Hi Folks,

I drive around Thailand and see so many busses and mini vans on these roads with Numbers on then, but most have the names in Thai.

So please Members, help us all out by posting on this thread the numbers and names, even if they do not state BKK, since most Province to other Province nor inter Province do not mention BKK

i.e. Kan to Erawan Waterfalls

I addition, please could you also mention if it is free air, open windows all the way.

it is a burocratic, but well thought out system, nearly uniqe in this world.

1.know that TH is divided in provinces=chaingwat, about 79 now (every few yrs a few are split), these are grouped into 4 regions (NO, N-E, centre and SO). Ev, prov. has a nr, about like in FRance with departements, but regionally. Province is subdivided into district=amphoe.

2.ALL bus/transport routes are in a national system-buses have 2 nrs, this is the first, before the slash.

Routes 1-998 cross provincial borders. 1-98 and 901-998 run to BKK, 1xx is North, 2xx is Isan, 3xx is central, 4xx and 7xx is south, 5xx is cross regions (f.e. ChMai-Ubon). 99 and 999 are NOT route nrs, but designate bus-quality from BoKoSo. Routes from BKK are also clustered into sections for regions-e.g. 81 to Kan, 88 to Suphan, all 8x routes go west

From BKK later was added 9901-99xx, to provide for newly opened

Routes IN a province, but cross amphoe bordrs have nrs 1001-8999, but not all nrs are taken. Many are just songhthaew, major ones are bus.

NB: hiccups occur if province are split-e.g. NOnghKhai-Beung Khan is now interprovincial, but has still the nr when it was 1 province. After many years this may indeed lead to new numbers.

Routes IN a amphoe have nrs like xx.yyy, with xx the province nr. F.e. in Nonthburi are routes 17.001-17.008, local routes around that market and the Mall Ngam, cityroutes in towns are also officially numbered as such, but are shortened for normal use to just the last. Nearly all these are not bus, but songhthaew.

The bigger BKK area is outside of this and has his own nrs-see other thread just opened. BMTA is 1-207, 501-559 (AC only) and additional routes are nmbrd. from 1001-1555, but not all nrs. taken, often songhthaews. Vans and Metrobus have their own. nrs.

LIstings of all these nrs do not exist on www, but often can be found:

1.the TAT has in Thai brochures for domestic tourism and these often list all routes in a place/town

2.several guidebooks also list them-rather haphazard. As can be expected, non-English books are often much more accurate and complete

3.beside this are the nrs. that indicate class of bus- 1,2,3,4, do not confuse.

THese route nrs., are issued buy the Ministry of Transport, Land departmt, and coordinated by BOrisat KOnsong, which is also a part-govt. owned company to provide transport between BKK and all provinces, but NOT interprovincial. Since then BKS has also been made responsible for international routes to Lao and Camb.

One thing to note is that with the big buses, the ones with a orange horizontal stripe along it, take the slow roads and commonalty stop when ever anyone is standing on the side of the road to ask them if they want to get on.

In my experience this doubles the time of the trip.
