Getting my Thai citizenship

Featured Replies

Any members from the UK here? It would be helpful in answering my questions.

I got my mum to speak to the Thai embassy and we were given papers which my mum needs to fill out, I will be able to get dual-citizenship because I'm a Luk Kreung I've been told.

The papers I got: One for me, the other three are for my mum to fill out as she needs to renew her passport. Apprently, my treatment at the Royal Thai Embassy is quite odd, incompetant beaurocrats apparently.

Now, I'm confused where I stand, I've recieved so many answers that I am unsure what I should do. I was officially told by the desk person that once those forms are filled in, I have exactly 10 days to visit Bangkok and get my Thai I.D and house registration and could lose my British passport if I don't go within 10 days.

Now, I spoke to a few people and was told that under Thai law, a Luk Kreung can have dual-nationalities unlike a Thai national, and the Thai embassy have no right to take away my passport.

Second concern is that I have to visit Bangkok for the Thai I.D and house reg. I was also told that I could simply do it in London, not in Bangkok

Third concern, well not really a concern, just some questions I need answering. When I turn 21 next year, I will be elegible for the Thai national lottery which takes place in April? Anyway, could I be conscripted? If so, how would this conflict with the British government If was unlucky enough to pick up a red ball? Even if I did the lottery, I feel like it would be my duty to atleast serve, I'm not fussed, I just prefer to continue my education and contribute in Science for Thailand instead.

Is it true I could be immune if I was in higher education?

How long would it take until I recieve my passport I.D, house registration? I would like to apply for university for 14/15. Does it speed up the process since my mother is a Thai national?

Oh and one last thing, is my Xbox 360 completely useless in Thailand? Region locked?

I'm sure this thread will be moved to the appropriate forum soon...

No one can take away your British passport.

It would be amazing if any Thai burocractic process was completed in less than 10 days!

My understanding is that you will be liable for the conscript lottery, and will have to serve if you draw the wrong colour. But you will not be conscripted if you are overseas, (but still liable for call-up if you return to Thailand while under 35 years old). If you are in higher education I believe your conscription term is reduced in length, (but I may be wrong here).

You can avoid conscription by being a post-op ladyboy.......

This one would be better in the Visa Forum.

These appears to be a need for a Luk Kreung secton within ThaiVisa. Somewhere that the kids can post about issues that relate to them whilst their fathers hang-out in general and start arguments. whistling.gif

Easy...read the notes pages of your British passport, Military service in another country is not a problem, and holding a British passport does not exclude you from national service either if you are also a citizen of the country which has the national service/conscription....been there, seen that, got the T shirt

No one can take away your British passport, you would have to officially renounce it of your own free will.

Thais of whatever ethnic background can have dual nationality, no problem as far as Thailand nor the UK is concerned.

I'm amazed you'd want to attend a Thai university if you have the chance to get a UK degree, guess you plan to only pursue a career in Thailand?

Once you're been here a while I'm sure you'll find out how to get out of the national service if you want to/can afford it. But if you're willing to serve I'm sure it will be a character-building experience for you.

No way, those videos man...is abuse common?! Is that what awaits me if I did get conscripted? I won't be able to stand back and watch a friend get abused, what would happen if I defended him?

Well I think I have my answers, thank you. I will deal with the conscription if the time comes.

A bunch of off topic, inflammatory and racist posts and replies removed. Any more like that will find a member put on a posting holiday.

Have you looked at this page on embassy website? http://www.thaiembassyuk.org.uk/?q=node/191

Although it is written for a registering a child's birth it does give info on what documents are required.

There is no rule that the house registration and etc. has to be done in 10 days.

To get a passport at the embassy does not require a house registration book or ID card. See this info from MFA website: http://www.mfa.go.th/main/en/services/1415/21482-e-Passport-Application-for-Thai-Nationals-Living-A.html
