Does anyone have experience with moving a Pet or even Bird/Parrot from Thailand to Hanoi Vietnam?

I stay and work in Buriram now but will move to Hanoi and I want to take my African grey parrot with me and want to know what I have to do to do so/

Maybe it is better and more easy to travel overland, via Laos?

I know that some kind of Health Certificate which is International recognized is required which brings me to which Vets are qualified to do so

as most Vets in Thailand are only focusing on dogs and cats!?

I may go back to Phuket first as is my home base!

Any advice or pointers would be appreciated.

Best

As far as I can tell, all you need is a health certificate issued by Thai Animal Quarantine Office (don't let the name put you off, that's the office that handles all pet import/export and they do not usually quarantine pets). You would also need that along with an export lices (issued by the same office) to get the bird on an airplane.

The Animal Quarantine office is at Suvanabhumi air cargo area. Some people have had success getting email info from them, if that fails have a Thai speaker call:

they are quite knowledgable about the regs in different countries and usually pretty helpful.

Alternatively, overland travel through either Laos or Cambodia would minimize the red tape though you should still have a health certificate to show, I know that they ask for this at the Cambodian border crossings anyhow as I often bring dogs and cats between Thailand and Cambodia overland.

what wild? many are born in captivity and dont belong in thailand in the wild either...and also become very attached, too much so even , to their owners.

Absolutely, Cameron (my African Grey) was born in Phuket last September and I am just as attached to him as he is to me!

Thanks a lot Sheryl I will follow up your suggested leads however I am almost considering a overland trip now as I am in Buriram now and not to far from sawannakhet and the cost to get a van through Laos and Vietnam to Hanoi. Is just under 1000 US$ and I would maybe pay more than that by going back to Phuket, BKK for all the paperwork's and the overweight luggage on the plane anyway as well as I may enjoy the trip as I never seen those areas in Laos and Vietnam yet!

A petty not to go Home to Phuket, which is my ultimate Home Base before so and I need to find a Vet in Buriram to get me the essential required documents and Health certificates but there must be some "Chicken Vet" somewhere who can do this for me!!

Anyone know how relaxed the customs are at Laos and Vietnam border to get a Pet Parrot through, nothing a small bribe can not handle I hope??

I've no experience with Laos or VN but the Camb land border crossings will let pets through even without papers for a small "tip". Not too long ago I brought a little kitten that I hadn't had tome to get vaccinated.

And, they accepted any sort of vaccine record with no $ required at all.

If you can get into the provincial town they are sure to have at least one Vet that issues health cards.

First does your bird have a ring on its leg ? This satisfies the powers that be that your bird was born in captivity you will need to apply for a cites permit to move your bird because it is an endangered species you can apply for this by completing an application form along with any reciepts vet bills etc to support your claim cost is less than 100 baht I dont have the address to hand but google cites thailand then you need to apply for an import certificate for vietnam you need to do this before you leave thailand I believe vet 4polyclinic in the chatuchak district in bkk has an avian vet that could do this again try google for tel no and map not sure if it actually has to be an avian vet though think most vets will issue health certificates if your pet is breathing .

Sounds like a lot but better to get these things now even if you go over land and tip the officials well because should you wish to return to your country of origin in the future you will have the supporting evidence of your birds history very useful hope this is some help

please repost if you get to vietnam and let us know how it went

Thanks for your great advise LM52LYN, best just to ignore people which make irrelevant and stupid comments so they get bored and move on!

Really great advise however I am trying to avoid going to BKK those days for obvious reasons and get things done here in Buriram and therefore I need to find a Local Vet who can get me some kind of documentation which I hope will get me with my Parrot (Cameron) through Laos and Vietnam!

Unfortunately he has no ring and no other documentation as was bought at a none commercial private breeder in Phuket last October!

I am very unlikely to go back to Germany with the Parrot or to live as my home base is and will always remain to be 1. Phuket, 2.Thailand or 3. Asia !

How to get the cites permit is still a mystery to me just now and do I really need it for the Overland trip, certainly I would for a flight!

Hi Berliner as this is thailand im guessing moving cameron across borders wouldnt be such a problem if you were a good tipper (wink, wink) I've ever tried it but im sure its been done perhaps its also possible if you can find a local vet to confirm the health of cameron he may also be able to give you a statement confirming he has seen you with your bird and can confirm he has been in your care for the last year and in his opinion was indeed hatched in thailand another good thing to have is some sort of bill of sale for him again im sure it would not be to difficult to obtain this type of paperwork mainly to prove he is yours in respect of the cites permit any travel outside the country would require this technically and to apply for that you would need the following:

download an application form from the cites thailand website

a health certificate

A copy of your passport

Something to confirm your bird was captive bred (reciept, vet statement etc )

And the fee of 50 baht

Send it buy post to

Cites office

Dept of national parks, wildlife and plant conservation

61 phaholythin rd

Chatuchak

Bangkok

Hope it all goes well for you both please let me know how you get on or if theres any other way I can help

I to am similar to the man with the Parrot

I live Prassat Issan, and moving to Hoi an Vietnam

I have 4 small small dogs and one Thai type dog

All have vaccination certs

Because I am only 10 hours drive to Hoi an. I wish to take my dogs and excess baggage by road via Laos

Bangkok is 5 hours drive ,then plane to Hanoi, then plane to Da nang.

TO LONG TRAVEL FOR THE DOGS

Plus if I use a removal company for my personnel belongings , apart from their high costs they then want an additional 550$ for customs clearance

Can any body help.
