More than 30,000 people cease contributing to the Social Security Fund

More than 30,000 people have already pulled out of the Social Security Fund after losing their jobs.

Social Security Office (SSO) secretary-general Pairoj Suksamrit (ไพโรจน์ สุขสัมฤทธิ์) said 34,483 contributors left the fund during the first 4 months of this year, citing unemployment.

Mr. Pairoj said expensive oil prices, the baht appreciation and rising inflation forced businesses to lay off a large number of workers. The jobless rate in March stood at 1.8% of the workforce, he said, adding SSO has already paid 235.46 million baht from the fund as unemployment compensations.

Mr. Thani said SSO may help reduce the social security burden of both employers and employees by lowering contributions to the fund for sickness, child bearing, child welfare and death benefits from the present 3% of the salaries of employees to 1%.

Now this statement has to be a lie. I know that we have been told repeatedly by other government shills spokespersons that none of these factors would have an adverse effect on the Thai economy. Somebody needs to get Mr. Pairoj in sync with the party line... :o
