Detectives beaten by PCAD protesters, Police say

Police agencies all over the world use undercover officers and it is a common type of operation for police agencies. I have never heard of any justification for assaulting a policeman, in uniform or in plain clothes. No matter why an undercover policeman is injured in the line of duty, the police department should always seek the arrest of anyone who injures one of their officers unless by doing so it will jeopardize an ongoing investigation. In this case it looks like their cover was and is blown.

However, an undercover or plainclothes officer does know the risks and potential dangers of working this way but usually it is done because it is the only way to discover the roots of criminal activity. So it doesn't matter why they were at that location and what they were doing if they were doing it in the line of lawful surveillance.

Aren't all these protesters supposed to be peaceful citizens? Looks like the police found some that are not.

What were they doing there? Did they identify themselves? Where were they? Wandering around the crowd, or around the back of the stage?

That's right! Did they get Suthep's permission to even be near the demonstations? Did they get permission from Suthep's secret police guard to be on public property? How dare them wander around in public places without recognizing Suthep's control. They are lucky they were not simply executed by Suthep's armed guards for invading Suthep's sovereignty.

But that didn't happen.. Did it!

It is perhaps too much to expect Khaosod to interview both sides of a story - a journalistic practice that predates Khaosod considerably. From this, we have one side, a gruesome story - told by the policemen involved - and gruesome pictures to match. But what is the full story ? A full story does not, incidentally, imply justification for violence. There is no justification for violence. What it does is it asks impassioned questions like - what exactly happened ? From what is printed here, there are legitimate questions that ought to be addressed. Let's address some of them here :

1. The fact that they were described as detectives suggests that they were in casual attire.

2. The men admitted that they came on the orders of the police department.

3. They claimed to be collecting evidence. What " evidence " would one be collecting at Lumpini park at 11 at night ? Had it been the scene of a crime that had previously taken place ? If so, why wasn't that released to the press ? Why wasn't it released by the police ? Why were they incognito ? Why wasn't a police detail sent to investigate in the clear light of day instead ? Why wouldn't they tell Khaosod what the evidence they were collecting was ? Or if that was " top secret ", why wouldn't they tell that to Khaosod instead ?

But then, once must inevitably pose questions to the journalistic practices of Khaosod, as shown in this story's coverage :

1. Did you pose any of these legitimate questions to these men ? And if not, why not ?

2. Would you consider - at some point in the future - a policy of interviewing the other side of this story ? But be careful here. The next question is the zinger -

If not, why not ?

Not sure I understand, even if they were there to observe and collect evidence to see if there was any illegal activities, so what. What is the other

side of the story. They were "spying" on us. Thats what the police do. Look out for crimes where they may be committed. I have seen many

photos of damage from peaceful protesters. The culprits were lucky the police were unarmed.

What is all this nonsense about - a few coppers getting a few taps for being a bit naughty and rather un-clever.

There are far more important issues in Thailand at the moment!!

Read the first 2 replies to the OP, do you agree with who cheers the beating and tell is what the 2 guys deserved because the actions of other policemen at Japanese Thai Stadium?

Who cares? They shouldn't have been spying on people - if someone was snooping around your house would you like it!!!

Let them play their childish games, just act a bit more professionally next time!!

Knowing the intelligence of the Thai constabulary they were probably dressed in uniform and going around taking pictures and making notes!!

Christ... They are POLICE! You know right? They have not only the right, but also the duty to investigate to prevent crimes or whatever.

Ok, I understand, not much to discuss here... Thanks for your opinion. I know you better now ;)

You right, in most western countries that is how police work, but here in Thailand police shoot at protesters, from roofs as man in black or from behind police lines who fire gas canisters in a crowd. This make that the police lost the trust and respect. Shooting with life bullets on unarmed protesters is not what I call " to protect and serve".

I see, two wrongs make a right.

Sorry, that does not justify anything and does not make what happened right. Perhaps you are only providing an explanation and could accept it as such as long as you are not using what you say as an excuse for one side or the other to resort to violence, especially against police conducting lawful surveillance.

That's very democratic - not allowing me a right of reply. well tough luck, I'm not finished yet.

I would like to hold a straw poll with the question being:

Do you respect the Thai police?

And yes I respect police. I live in a foreign country and respect institution and police. What about you?

According to the statement, at around 23.00 last night the officers were gathering intelligence near Lumpini Park

Anyone who has had dealings, or know Thais who have had dealings, with the Lumphini police, will surely see this as poetic justice.

This has to be one of the most corrupt and mafia-like police offices in Bangkok and maybe Thailand.

Remember the 2 Italian tourists who were kidnapped last year? Lumphini police.

(Non-smoking) tourists getting 'fines' for dropping cigarettes on lower Sukhumvit? Lumphini police.

Shaking down the working-girls in Nana? Lumphini police.

One big som nam na.

Perhaps a bit of karmic payback....... Given all the beatings the police have handed out,

hard to feel sorry for a couple of policemen being roughed up...

Deplorable Eyeswideshut! So in the meantime, I really hope you never need a helping hand from the RTP or any of its affiliates as karma may come back and bite you where it hurts. We are all people you know with loved ones, sounds like someone has an issue with authority to me.

Why is it so bad for a policeman to get beaten up - of course they never do this to defenceless civilians, do they!!

A favourite pastime of retiree policeman is to become hit men!!

One ex-policeman I know killed about 2,700 people!!

Well until further evidence surfaces I simply do not believe it. The last 'alleged' cop beatings were a set-up and then of course we have the guys (police) who were filmed putting on casfake to then be positioned as 'injured' policemen, which in itself should be a jail-able offence. Amazing how such a thing happened at the protest site yet not one of the thousands of people in close proximity with a smart phone got the video or the photo's. If I am wrong then it's a case of the boy who cried wolf, the police had a chance and lied through the teeth to fabricate injury at the hands of the protestors, as a result, In a word...tough!

I totally get were your coming from about journalism here in Thailand.. BUT gruesome pictures.. I've had worse injuries falling out of bed ...... It may have happened.. but like normal this is total overkill... in hospital beds for bruises.. Christ . no wonder the police aren't't doing anything they are to scared they gonna break a nail.

You lost three teeth falling, out of bed?cheesy.gif ...damn, your four poster must be elevated quite a bit.

They (in picture) have a typical police face, so they don't have to use police uniform, the "peaceful protesters" can recognize them easily anyway.

And who told that the detective work is not dangerous? Beaten, hurt, lost 3 teeths but they were lucky cause ther are alive. These protesters were really peaceful, or something disturbed their killer attack.

I don't think there is any fence to jump from the police to the criminal fraternity. A line in the sand ... maybe.

Then if what your saying is true, which we enlightened ones know is not you should as a duty bound member and or guest of Thai society report this to the relevant authorities... No but you cannot because it is simply not true. Are people including the ex so called RTP drinking a bit to much today? If you need an escort to the authorities to inform them of these facts just let me know....

Disgraceful comment. Some might be crooked but the vast majority are pretty ok and ordinary guys. They are the ones in the front line, ie between YOU , ME and the loonies

The front lines between the loonies and us? They will step out of the way if the loonies come for you, I assure you. If you have ever had to deal with the police in any real capacity, you will know this. They are paper pushers and money collectors, not law enforcement officers as they are made out to be.

Most are crooked, some are ok and ordinary guys.

I wonder if the poor fella has managed to scramble out of that big hole yet?

OK, let's discount Tak Bai and the illegal coup from 2012.

That still leaves the 2,500 extra-judicial killings that he ORDERED in 2003 to the provincial authority chiefs to fill a specified number quota of murders of drug related criminals, otherwise they would face dismissal or demotion!!

It's a shame that more than half of those he murdered were innocent civilians.

Don't believe me?? then check it out on Wikipedia!!!

I have.....

1. Personally witnessed one of the executions of the 2700 people, killer was clearly a policeman.

2. Spoke with a CIA operative who informed me that almost all contract killings are done by off duty police.

3. Been shaken down countless times by roadside police for money. No need for a pretense

of me doing something wrong, they just demand money.

4. Read many stories of the Thai police gone wrong. From drug running, to kidnapping that

Italian tourist, to shooting tourists, the stories are endless.

So yeah, basically my contempt for the Thai police knows no bounds. I have no problem with

authority, just dislike being under the thumb of corrupt bozos with guns. And if I needed a helping hand,

I would not even think of calling the police.....Always amusing to read of people's shock who are victims

of crime, when they learn they have to pay the police to fill out a out a crime report.

And on a side note, if karma really exists, then there are a hell of a lot of Thai police who have a lot more

to worry about regarding karmic justice than me. :-)

Headline says detectives, pol. says officers?!?!?!?!?

How did protesters know they were spies?

Or what were "officers" doing in the protest?

Taking notes?

If they blended in and god forbid, die. Wouldn't a fresh report pin the protesters for causing the officers' death?

IMO the biggest conspirators are the incompetent reporters...

(Remember, the pen is mightier than the sword)

Not everything is a direct translation to English.

Hell, even the bible cannot be directly translated to English (yes, we still have biblical scholars refuting this verse and that verse etc)

Take news reports with a "pinch of salt" it's never about the truth, simply "what kind of news sell well" or in this case, simply a biased view if things.

Breathe in, breathe out, that'll untie the knots in your knickers!

In case you're all wondering, I take no sides, it's not my fight and furthermore I'm color blind!
