The train is slow. Keep that in mind. There is along the way and close to Lopburi Wat Changsen, it has its own nearby train station (make sure the train stops there). http://<URL Automatically Removed>/thailands-travellers-tales/114362-chansen-museum-wat-chansen.html This link has nice photos and some further details.

If you go by train dont be fooled by the touts waiting for prey at the train station in Philok. The bus station is a bit further away - so do your homework on google maps.

Depending on your time budget you might prefer to get on a bus in Lopburi.

The time you save might allow you a visit to the Si Satchanalai Historical Park. I personally like that place much more than Sukothai. Between the two places is Sawankalok with a small national museum devoted to local pottery. This will help you to put the kilns in Si Satchanalai into context. Another side trip would be the Historical Park Kampanpeth. Also VERY worthwhile.

I like the train ride to Philok but it was getting a bit long (I took a train from BKK).

Hello Viewers!

I took a trip to Sukhothai just a few weeks ago. Train from Hua Lampong station ( which from memory stops at Lopburi ( Planet of the Apes ) en route....If you catch the Express Train it is " fast & smooth " and generally from experience is slightly quicker than taking a bus ( which i find rather boring..) Once you arrive at Phitsanulok which is a " big & busy " Train Station then you can take a " leisurely stroll " (with your hands in your pockets...) to the local Bus station. You then take the bus to Sukhothai Bus terminal.(about an hour away) I found a nice room to stay for 200 baht for the night. In the morning around 06.00 we caught the bus ( Chiang Mai ) which took us to Sukhothai Historical Park.( The Park is absolutely stunning! ) I have attached a few photos that i took at 07.00 in the morning ( with a camera in one hand & and a 7 eleven coffee in the other..) Free entrance, not a big Park but 3-4 hours is enough time!

Now Viewers..If you are planning a trip here i would highly recommend hiring " a bicycle " for just a few baht the bicycle will come " fully loaded with all extras" ( inc a " basket & a bell " ) ....How cool is that..? clap2.gif

Enjoy your trip!

While we are on the subject of ancient buildings etc, I'm always amazed how few farangs visit The Ancient City (Mueang Boran) just 30 km from Bangkok and easily accessible by bus from Sukhumvit. Huge 200 acre park recreating the whole history of Thailand, take one of their bicycles (tamdens too) or hire a golf cart or just jump the trams that trundle around the park.True it's "recreated" but amazingly well done with astonishingly little of the naffness or kitsch you might expect. Don't take my word for it, read the Trip Advisor reviews.
