36yo moving to Thailand

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am a 36yo old Australian male planning to move to Thailand and live with my Thai girlfriend. I have NO intentions of coming back to Australia. My love for Thailand is in my blood.

I do of course on plan to find a job when i arrive.

Can I be advised on visa recommendations based on my supplied information please?

I greatly appreciate all the help you can offer. Thank you in advance.

Tourist visa. A single will get you 90 days with 1 extension, 1900 baht. A double will get you almost 180 days with 1 border run and 2 extensions. A triple will get you almost 270 days with 2 border runs and 3 extensions.

The other option is enroll in an approved school and get an ED visa.

Most likely the only job that you will be able to find is teaching English if you are qualified!

perhaps start TEFOL now, if you haven't already. get copies of diploma and transcripts, letter of recommendations (might not be needed, couldn't hurt), and all your shots from doctor/hospital. i think 1 year can be done at about $14,000 AUD, and so 10-years at $140,000. which is not small change. make $1200 AUD a month teaching. maybe $1200 for ED visa. anyhow, i am sure you will be happier in BKK> good luck

You can look for work with a tourist visa and when you find work you can also do the application for a work permit with it.

You can also go to school with it.

Your age will be no problem at all.

Not true - there are plenty of expats working in Thailand in all sorts of different fields although finding an English teaching job is easier than finding another professional job. However, finding a job, any job in any country is not usually an easy process, especially so if you're not a native of that country. However, we don't know what the OPs qualifications are but let me just say this:

A tourist visa is fine for looking for work. A legitimate company will be able to issue the appropriate documents to get you legal i.e. non-B visa and work permit.

What do you do work wise in OZ and where are you planning to live in Thailand?

I'm a graphic designer and even better documentary photographer. Personally I would prefer to be a journalist photographer but many great freelance photographers are based in Thailand

...plenty float about, but if you are any good, I'd focus on building up work in those areas. Unless you have the heart to be a teacher, simply don't do it, for your own sake and for the sake of your students.

All the best with your move.

I am pretty sure a potential employer will want to see a good picture of yourself. I also think recommendations from Thais hold more weight than from your country (could be wrong). I would assume overdress for the interview. If you are really serious, I would start a youtube channel with teaching lessons. i think ajarn is good for finding jobs. bing/google it. i would also create some free website and post english lessons. anything to make it seem like this is your passion. once you have a job, you can scale back.

*i do agree that it would be better to teach if you love teaching, but we all understand the importance of money. in a perfect world, you only work where the entire world benefits. this place is far from perfect. coffee1.gif
