Bars closed.

Not seen a single place not serving alcohol all day, well, until an hour ago! These scaremongering stories come about every time there's a rumour the bars might have to close.

In 12 years I've never seen a complete, "no alcohol day" (and that includes a policeman buying me a beer on one of the most auspicious Buddha days of the year!!!).

Just roll with it, it'll be fine.

6 o'clock tonight (Sat) to midnight tomorrow, officially.

Due to 'advance voting' by people who claim that they are unable to vote next week.

I'm hoping tomorrow will be ok. Usually I wouldn't care but have 2 friends here from England, and now have to tell them that they can't have a drink. Absurd.

In the Chalong Pier area Phuket, the Police went around and forced the bars open. to close. Three months in jail and Baht 10,000 fine! Apparently, they worked so late in the the night, that no police around to keep the polling stations open. Thailand for u.

A friend who has the Witches Tavern on Thonglor had his Manager arrested on Saturday night by Thonglor Boyz in Brown, for selling wine with the food in his restaurant. He had to put up bail of B20,000 and expects a B10,000 fine on Monday. This is on top of the B5,000/month all the bars pay to the BIB in protection money. Another friend with powerful friends tried to contact the Chief of Police of Thonglor and his deputies, but he was told they were all out having a drink!

Last night also in Chiang Mai I could not get a beer with my dinner in the tourist area. Strict enforcement of the law!

Then I read this morning the news about the blockade of countless polling stations. Where is the police??

What a bunch of yahoos!

Ahhhh, the joys of knowing where to look for a beer and a chat with friends clap2.gif

Yes, I had several beers with friends last night, ban or no ban. As ever, it is a case of knowing where to look.

Though I do feel for those down for the weekend or those just starting their holidays.

Tonight is no problem for me as I willo be at Swampy, waiting for my flight out - sadly crying.gif

Buddy of mine with years in the trade suggests if anyone wants to drink at his place, he will pull the shutters down and hang up the 'Closed' sign since Pattaya's finest are up to the usual punters shenanigans with teapots, kettles and other means of disguising alcohol and they are just itching to make some busts and/or get some tea money.

Most 'locals' will know the places which tend to be 'exempt' from such closures. Sidle up to some and have an ask. It's no secret where to go for a beer in Pattaya on ''closed days''..

Several years ago I was sat at a place in NernPlabWan with a few pals when some Immigration Cops turned up and told us we'd have to move on at 6pm, but then wonderfully told us where we could go and find an open bar....

Any early news whether we're actually allowed to have a beer tonight in this great democracy?

I have some CHUMS here from England, so no interest in taking them down a filthy alley way somewhere drinking out of plastic cups with no music. We are not THAT desperate?

Legally it's game on again at midnight, that I do know..

DK Head springs to mind here, why do you think people go to Pattaya.

Go preach somewhere else MUPPET.

I would have thought going to Pattaya for the girls would have priority over the alcohol, and the bars are not closed. I suppose it's OK for me to say that as I don't drink.

Hi

I was in a bar briefly last night ( on soi bukhao), sign there said no alcohol Jan 25 6.00 PM - Jan 26 6.00 PM so that would suggest OK from 6.00 PM onwards today assuming that bar got time correct and that there have been no changes.

now on topic again - as far as I know the bars will be serving after 8pm - would be interested if anyone can confirm this

'Restart" times tend to be ambiguous. Often it's the bars who've paid them most 'bung' who get the nod first. As a rule of thumb, once the Sun is long down (6-7pm) and all the teamoney is counted then it's as you were once again...

I wouldn't get too bothered by little "mary" sunshine's posts "she" tends to specialise in little trollish wind-up one liners....

Personal attack removed also some quoted replies:

In using Thai Visa I agree:

1) To respect fellow members.

4) Not to flame fellow members.Flaming will not be tolerated. 'Flaming' is defined as posting or responding to a message in a way clearly intended to incite useless arguments, to launch personal attacks, to insult, or to be hateful towards other members. This includes useless criticism, name-calling, swearing and any other comments meant to incite anger.

what a lame complaint coming from someone whose friends' country used to close the bars every afternoon and then close by 11pm

There are plenty of places selling that you can take home to drink. It's absurd that you stay in Pattaya and couldn't plan ahead or know where to buy something to take away if you & your friends are unable to go a day or two without booze.

Absurd is the word, but that's Thailand's middle name.

Some might argue, it's about the entertainment.

Ever see Cheers?

Bar is usually a place to socialize with your mates. biggrin.png

go play with the traffic and do us all a favour
