Australia has welcomed opportunities to strengthen cooperation with Myanmar in a range of sectors as its reform process continues, Ambassador Bronte Moules said in Yangon on January 23.

The role of the Australian embassy had expanded significantly in response to this new scope for cooperation, she said at a reception to mark Australia Day, on January 26.

Ms Moules said Canberra’s development assistance program was a major focus of the embassy’s work, particularly in the areas of education – which includes hundreds of scholarships and fellowships for study in Australia – as well as health, agriculture and livelihoods.

Increasing engagement had resulted in the opening of a Trade Commission office at the embassy last year and will see the appointment of a resident defence attaché this year, she said.
