Chalerm Flees Meeting After Taunting Protesters

BANGKOK: -- Commander of the Center for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) has fled the meeting shortly after he challenged the besieging anti-government protesters.

Supporters of the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD) have marched to lay siege at the Army Club on Vibhavadi Road this afternoon, where Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her Cabinet appointed to hold a meeting.

PCAD threatened to break into the venue and "capture" Ms. Yingluck and her Cabinet members. The protest leaders also demanded the government dissolve CMPO within 24 hours.

But CMPO chairman, Mr. Chalerm Yoobamrung, derided PCAD′s demands. "Are the protesters confused?" Mr. Chalerm asked. He also criticised the PCAD′s threat to surround CMPO headquarters at the Police Club tomorrow.

Nevertheless, he said, the CMPO has already arranged an emergency headquarters venue in Nakhon Pathom province lest "problems" occurred. Mr. Chalerm insisted the plan should not be seen as a retreat, as he is confident he can defend the headquarters from the protesters.

"The protesters have acted too much like gangsters," Mr. Chalerm said, "If they are still acting like gangster by storming Army Club and Police Club, I would like them to storm their own properties".

He added, "We have already warned them, but if they still don′t listen to us, they are welcomed to try".

However, as the protests in front of the Army Club grew more tense, especially after an unknown assailant reportedly fired shots at the protesters, Mr. Chalerm changed his mind and quickly fled the meeting venue through the back exit.

Mr. Chalerm′s current whereabouts is unknown.

What a scum sucking maggot - worst of the lot.

What a clown. If he only used his powers for good, instead of evil. His mandate should have been to prevent violence, not incite and encourage the protesters.

The BangkokPost just had a newsflash saying one of the protesters outside the ArmyClub was shot at and hit in the leg. The perpetrator arrested by protest guards, 'allegedly' beaten up a bit when trying to flee the scene and sent to Rajavithi Hospital.

how's that for taunting protesters?

What is Yingluck thinking putting this mutt in charge of handling the protests?

A sure-fire way to screw things up even more. So we have Chalerm on one side and Suthep on the other. Both equally despicable. Is this all the Thais can offer? Where's their Lech Walesa? 55! Not in a million years. Probably just another corrupt fat-cat Thai-Chinese to the rescue. They get what they deserve.

Taking the day off from defending peaceful protestors and non-violence, the terrible tragedy of people shooting at people?

I thought our resident TV poster of propaganda for PTP said there was only a handful of old women protesting.

Well I can gaurantee it won't be in the deep south of Thailand.

While this incident has comic elements, a man was shot outside and his shooter hospitalised.

Even worse, the head of the govt body responsible for keeping a volatile situation from erupting decided to 'taunt' the protesters.

That sort of thing always goes down well in Thailand I've found, always seen as being a bit of a laugh.
