Tensions Rise as Israel and Hezbollah Edge Closer to War
Despite growing international pressure to de-escalate, both Israel and Hezbollah signaled a readiness to intensify their cross-border conflict. On Sunday, Hezbollah’s deputy chief, Naim Qassem, declared that the militant group had entered a "new phase" in its battle against Israel. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel had inflicted "a series of blows on Hezbollah that it could have never imagined" following intense rocket fire from Lebanon. Hezbollah hit residential area in Haifa Israel’s military focus appears to be shifting toward Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group, following nearly a year of sporadic cross-border clashes that began in October. An Israeli airstrike on Friday in southern Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold, killed Ibrahim Aqil, the head of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force. Lebanon’s health ministry reported that the strike killed 45 people. The violence escalated after a series of blasts targeting communication devices across Lebanon earlier in the week, which killed 39 people and injured nearly 3,000, actions that were attributed to Israel. At Aqil’s funeral, Hezbollah’s Naim Qassem vowed that the group was ready to face any military scenario. "We have entered a new phase, namely an open reckoning," Qassem said. "Threats will not stop us... We are ready to face all military possibilities." Hezbollah’s Radwan Force has played a pivotal role in ground operations, and Israel has repeatedly demanded that its fighters withdraw from the border areas. UN special coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, voiced grave concerns, warning that the region was "on the brink of an imminent catastrophe." Israel’s military reported that more than 150 rockets, missiles, and drones were fired into its territory on Sunday, most originating from Lebanon. In response, Israel targeted Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese health ministry confirmed that three people were killed in these strikes, while Hezbollah reported the loss of two fighters. As the violence continues, both sides seem locked in a cycle of retaliation, with Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah declaring that Israel would face consequences for the recent attacks. Meanwhile, truce talks remain stalled, as the exchanges of fire claim lives and displace tens of thousands on both sides of the border. Credit: RFI (Radio France Internationale) | X 2024-09-23 -

Mechanic Crushed to Death by Truck in Cha-am
Picture courtesy of Daily News. An incident claimed the life of a 28-year-old truck mechanic on September 22, while he was repairing the undercarriage of a ten-wheeler truck. The incident occurred at a truck repair shop along the Cha-am-Pranburi bypass, heading towards Bangkok. According to police reports, the mechanic, identified as Mr. Jetsada, had finished replacing parts under the truck and was preparing to reattach the rear wheels. As he was adjusting the hydraulic jack to lift the truck higher, it tilted unexpectedly, causing the heavy vehicle to crash down on him, fatally crushing his head. His wife and brother, who were present at the scene, were left devastated, clinging to his body in tears. Police officers, along with rescue teams, arrived swiftly. They found the lifeless body of the mechanic pinned beneath the rear axle of the white Isuzu truck. Fellow workers, including the mechanic's brother, who owned the shop, managed to use a backhoe to lift the truck off his body. Unfortunately, it was too late, as he had died from severe head trauma. The truck owner explained that the mechanic had initially used two jacks to raise the vehicle and had successfully completed his task of replacing the suspension. However, when he tried to adjust the jack further to reinstall the wheels, the truck's weight caused the jack to collapse, leading to the tragic accident. Police have launched a formal investigation. The body was transported to Cha-am Hospital for an autopsy before being released to the family for funeral rites. -- 2024-09-23 -

Anti-Cannabis Law Draft: Political Compromise, Not Moral Outrage
I can't quite work this out. Is this a win or not for cannabis users in Thailand? Will people still be able to use cannabis quietly in their home or do they need to fear that the police will come crashing through their door to arrest and/or fine them? I also wonder if there will be some unwritten line in the sand where if you have less than a certain amount in your possession then it will be overlooked, but above a certain amount and things get ugly? The other question is if you are a medical cannabis user who intends to follow the law, then how will you be permitted to get your cannabis legally? Will you be able to get a doctor's report from any medical clinic and then just buy from any local cannabis shop of your choice or will you need to see a doctor at a government hospital and then buy your stuff from a government outlet only? Maybe I'm missing something here, but, to me, all of the actual intent of this legislation is as clear as mud. -

Election Commissioners Face Removal Over Senatorial Election Fiasco
Great news. The EC is a pathetic crowd of yes men. The senate election was a complete farce. But I doubt the CC will act. After all, the BJT dominated Senate is proving a useful conservative replacement for the old Senate. The focus now is on isolating the PP. Old enemies will unite to keep them out. -

Expert Urges Government To Raise Tax For Foreign Condo Buyers
I advise Dr Sopon to look at some other countries, like Philippines, Vietnam, but also Latin America. As soon as it is known the possibilities in these countries are better, many will leave, and Thailand will wean about the goose who laid the golden eggs disapperared to another nation. I could already convince my Thai lady NOT to settle in TH anymore. -

Trans Woman Falls to Death from Chonburi Condo, Found Wanted on Human Trafficking Charges
Picture of the scene. A 20-year-old trans woman fell to her death from a six-story condominium in Chonburi, with further investigations revealing that she was wanted on human trafficking charges. The incident occurred at 17:30 on September 22, at a condo located in Moo 12, Na Pa Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chonburi Province. Police from the Mueang Chonburi Station, along with a rescue team from Trikunatham Foundation, rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a person falling from a height. The victim, identified as Mr. Tawan (surname withheld), a 20-year-old trans woman from Surat Thani, was found in critical condition, face down on the ground. Despite the rescue team's efforts to revive her, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after. Eyewitnesses reported that they did not know much about the victim, only that she had rented two rooms in the condo. Moments before the fall, she was seen coming out of the room, seemingly trying to climb from one room to the other by the balconies, when she tragically fell. However, no one was aware of her legal troubles until after the incident. Further investigation by the authorities revealed that the deceased had a court warrant issued for her arrest on human trafficking charges. Police are currently investigating whether the impending arrest may have caused her distress and led to a possible suicide, or if the fall was an accidental result of trying to move between rooms. The investigation is ongoing as authorities question individuals close to the victim and examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai) or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). Please also contact your friends or relatives at this time if you have feelings of loneliness, stress or depression. Seek help. -- 2024-09-23 Apologies, ASEAN NOW is not currently accepting comments on this topic //CLOSED//
