BANGKOK: -- Without pedestrians dodging sidewalk motorists, will it still feel like Thailand?

All 88 Bangkok police stations have been ordered to take undisciplined driving seriously and issue tickets to drivers who break traffic laws.

All of this starts Saturday.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau plans 2014 to be the year of strict punishment for traffic law violators in order to decrease accidents on the road, according to Police Maj. Gen. Jirason Kaewsangeak, the commander of traffic police.

He added all traffic police in Bangkok will focus on the following 13 basic traffic laws: [read more...]

mmm what is "6. Overtaking other vehicles in public" ?

This could make the BiB more money on bribes, driving without a licence could now set the driver back 500 b instead of 300 due to this crack down !cheesy.gif

mmm what is "6. Overtaking other vehicles in public" ?

So we have to go onto private land to overtake now? I'm confused.

6. Overtaking other vehicles in public

I like this one. you must be allowed to overtake other vehicles in private.

they forgot the one about pedestrians blocking roads

All of this starts Saturday.

And will cease next Saturday.

Yawn !! .... ANOTHER PR attempt by the BIBs ..... We all know what will happen ..... coffee1.gif

"...focus on...13 basic traffic laws."

I wonder why the list given to each police officer has an amount anywhere from THB 500 to THB 2000 following each infraction. HMMMMMMMMMwhistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gif

Fund raising for the future.

Now there is traffic they can make up for lost time revenue.

Could start by setting an example first and obeying laws themselves...I know, silly passing thought.

Stop bashing the traffic police........they are only doing their job.....as always did.......without ever asking for any money from any drivers......whistling.gif

The crackdown to stop cars from parking on main roads was effective for 1 day I think.

I was not aware it was April's fool day today coffee1.gif

Every day is April 1st here.

(or at least feels like it reading the news)

This must be serious folks as they've been ordered to do it instead of the usual ' urged '.

Is it 1st April already

mmm what is "6. Overtaking other vehicles in public" ?

I must admit this one has me a tad bit confused my self

Again, isn't it every 6 months ?

Or is it this time to block protesters or is it to raise more tea money after hiding from the protestors ?

"all traffic police in Bangkok will focus on the following 13 basic traffic laws:"

That'll cause 'em to lose focus to the booger on the tip of their finger though..

14) Driving around with 500 baht more than you really need.

No mention of crosswalks! In most countries drivers are required to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. Here they are largely ignored, even when there are push-buttons, timers and signal lights. At the one near me, I push the button, wait patiently for 40 seconds, and when the 'walk' light turns green -- I continue to wait as the traffic just goes on whizzing by, right through the red lights! Even if I manage to stop the cars and trucks by actually standing on the crosswalk in the middle of a traffic lane, the motorcycles threading the narrow gaps between those vehicles continue at full speed. And nothing stops the buses. I never try to cross the street ahead of an approaching bus. They don't even slow down; in fact I think they speed up and try to hit me before I can scuttle across to the the (relative) safety of the opposite sidewalk - where I am just as likely to get hit by a motorcycle taxi!

I would love to know if there is any law about any of this, and if there is, why there is not even any pretence of enforcement.

Maybe it got lost in translation.

Maybe no overtaking in public squares or no overtaking while scratching your pubes after a night at the karaoke bar.

The police are about the only thing Yingluck is somewhat in charge of. Hope some of the revenue is skimmed off for the Farmer's Rice Fund.

How about this.

Instruction to Police Officers;

Rule 1. Enforce ALL Laws.

Rule 2. Refer to Rule 1.
