Chip & Pin Transactions Now In Thailand

I was at Fortune IT mall buying some PC hardware over the weekend and as I paid with my credit card I had to enter a PIN number to complete the transaction.

They had this in UK when I last visted but never tried it

Weird thing is that I still had to sign the transaction slip, even though the paper did not have a space for the signature.

Do you have to sign as well as enter the PIN elsewhere

Anywhere else using this in Thailand?

We used pin code since more than a decade in France, that's even where the microchip has been created!

No need to sign, it might just be a stupid Thai way of non-understanding... because the code is the electronic signature, a lot better than you handwriting.

Same for me; I paid for shopping in Big C with a credit card and it asked for my pin.

Initially, the staff tried to enter something when prompted for a pin and of course the card was refused. I was then told that the card didn't work!

On second go, I kept a closer eye before realizing that the "chip and pin" system had now been implemented here. I entered my pin and all was well but they still asked for a signature even though pin was already verified and there was no dotted line to sign on!

Boy, really behind the states by at least 20 yrs. In the states every supermarket, gas station, convenience store has a machine at the cashiers desk. you slide your atm card or credit card enter your pin and it is a done deal. no signature is required. In the states no one carries cash any more.

Exactly how is it better? There is no way to prove you did not enter a PIN but a forged signature is easy to prove. I declined the PIN option on my current US credit card (it was an option not a requirement).

I have a new BBL Visa Card. It has an EMV chip so most of the people don't understand they put the card in the side of the reader. Eventualy they do.

I have only been asked for a Signature, not a PIN.

slightly off topic but I remember in the UK once - pre-chip'n'pin - I switched some drinks in a pub.

I was rat-arsed so signed the receipt 'mickey mouse' for a laugh. The barmaid didn't even check it!! :o

I welcome chip'n'pin. :D
