As regards calling the police, it depends on whether the foreign bar owner has a work permit or not?

What I would have done If I had been a legit owner of that bar, is either called the police or got my staff to take the girls to the police or escorted one of them to an ATM machine if they did not have enough cash to pay the bill.

I am guessing that the foreign owner is using a Thai to front his business, which is usual in Thailand, so therefore he decided to write off the money owed rather than bring attention to himself from the police.

I can't believe that they wouldn't even agree to a reduced bill -- what azzholes!! That is just sleazy and dishonest.

I hope for their sake they don't try that in bar owned and run by Thais. I am pretty sure that within about 10 seconds after leaving the bar, they would be beaten bloody and the bill plus a generous tip removed from their purses.

i remember years ago in koh pangan,a guy and his girl tried to do a runner from a bar,the cry went up and the thais came from everywhere,he got a severe beating,i think she copped a couple of slaps too,the money for the bil was removed from thier persons,and they were warned in no uncertain terms to be on the next boat off the island,they sure saw a side of kon thai that i am sure they had not realised existed,before their foolhardy attempt to cheat,in fact they were lucky i think,never get between kon thai and money.

If you make the waitress responsible for that tab what does she do if the customer pulls a gun? Demanding that the server deal with the <deleted> may put them in harm's way.

Most Thai bar girls would have been well capable of doing that, even if it were a guy ripping them off.

Most foreigner bars don't allow Thai male customers in, and they are the only ones with guns.

You seem to be another who believes all they read without the experience of dealing with authority in this country. Yes, we are still talking about Thailand. There would be no witnesses? Unless you trusted all your staff to not fall apart when questioned by the police if a complaint was raised by the girls, fine. If you are willing to kill your business for the value of less than 2,000 baht.

The experience comes from running a bar here for almost 13 years.

To be honest though, there is a lot of information missing from the OP, I assume to protect the bar owner. Like where the bar is, commercial area, up-country, the islands? (It matters)

Is the bar licensed correctly? Does the owner have his alcohol (imported & local) licenses? If open for more than 12 months, does he have his tax slips? Etc, etc, etc.

Anyway, he needs to put this behind him and learn from the experience. Get his staff trained up and think about getting CCTV installed. Always remembering the CCTV cuts two ways, if he decides to 'help out' in the bar.....................

also remove their id ,money ,iphones ,jewellery etc and have them dropped off a few miles away

in an area nobody speaks a word of english

If I'm going to engage then the answer is don't let scammers leave next time. I wouldn't bother with the BIB as it could cost you more than you bargained for.

Nine out of ten establishments would have offered these girls one polite invitation to settle the bill or matters would escalate rapidly and far beyond their western expectations. A typical Thai barmaid knows her pay would be docked in this situation and two drunken falang wouldn't be allowed to waltz off scot-free and, if they did, they wouldn't get far before they experienced a lot of pain.
