Despite the headlines, Audi’s plan to build electric SUVs in the U.S. is far from a manufacturing comeback. Audi is considering shifting production of models like the Q4 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, and Q8 e-tron to the U.S. to avoid tariffs — but this is a trade-driven move, not a return to industrial strength. No decision until late 2025 No production before 2026–2027 Full U.S. content unlikely before 2031–2033, if ever Only a few thousand jobs, mostly in automation and skilled support — not traditional factory employment Key components still imported, including batteries and rare earth materials The U.S. lacks the supply chain scale to fully localize EV production anytime soon Biden supported EVs through subsidies and infrastructure investment. Trump now is rolling back EV support — freezing charger funds, moving to end tax credits and likely subsidies — warning it could be a “bloodbath for the auto industry” if EVs continue to be promoted over gas-powered cars — making this one of the worst times in years to build EVs in the U.S. Bottom line: This is a political adjustment, not a manufacturing resurgence. The U.S. will remain dependent on global supply chains, and the actual impact will be smaller, slower, and far less certain than the headlines suggest. -
