I read the forum rules and the only thing that seems to apply is:

3) Not to post in a manner that is vulgar, obscene or profane.

I read this as meaning that the overall tone of the post must first be considered (that's what "in a manner" means) before it can be determined whether or not a single use of a vulgar word is acceptable or not.

Reason for asking: I rarely use such words, but sometimes it's necessary purely for academic reasons (example, reporting what you saw in the newspaper or on a sign). Now if the post is insulting or a flame, I agree this is something that runs afoul of the rule.

Examples:

1. Not profane: "While driving to work today, the radio announcer said that politician Smith is full of [vulgar word].

2. Definitely profane: Thai Visa member Smith is a lying sack of [vulgar word].

Am I correct in my interpretation of rule #3?

Okay will do. But just FYI, I did a search for the vulgarity in question, and the search engine reports that:

Your search for the term [expletive deleted] returned 1000 results

I performed this search a few days ago prior to making a post, and this result from the search engine suggested that usage was quite common. You can imagine my surprise when my post ended up being deleted - even though the expletive was masked with a special character like th_s.

I guess I'll be using the "report post" option a lot more from now on, to help you guys clean up. But thanks for the guidance.
