IKEA only in Bangkok? Do they ship Up-country?

Hi Guys !

I see there's an IKEA in Bangkok, but don't know if they have outlets in other towns. Do they?

Presuming that BBK is the only one, does anybody know if they ship gear UP-COUNTRY (far away from Bangkok)?

I live way out in the sticks in a tiny village, where folks mostly retire around 8pm....burp.gif

Don't know if they ship but there are 2 more ikea's coming to BKK.

The quality of their products is worse then in Europe though. Bought a stainless steel trolley for 6800 baht and it is rusty now after 3 weeks.

Really? Thanks - no stainless steel for me, just "normal" furniture. Was mighty pleased with their stuff when living in Denmark - it lasted for years (after the usual fights to actually assemble the bleddy things!). tongue.png

Mind you, I'll have to contact their "service" dept to be sure that they DO deliver to the far north. If their service dept is anything like the Danish one to go by, then they don't know much, if anything at all.....whistling.gif

It does seem a bit weird that SS can rust so quickly. Is the item kept outside in the rain, fog, dew all the time....?

Yes surely you can buy better from local outlets?

Only have one local outlet here - the assortment is non-existent and the quality is pretty cruddy, but the prices are rather high. At some time or other I'll need to fill a house up with furniture, so maybe it's possible to buy everything at the same time and be able to choose things we actually want, rather than have to "make do" with the local undersized pink and green cupboards, bookshelves, etc. and rather ugly plastic sofas...wub.pngblink.png

Shipped to Phuket, huh? That sounds promising......hope everything was OK when it arrived.

Can't say that I'm expecting "European quality", but perhaps not paying "European prices", either. Whatever, some of their furniture looks to be rather nice and quite usable - and it would certainly save me having to journey all around the province and beyond, looking for reasonable furniture stores and buying a bit here and a bit there.

Delivery costs at each furniture store mount up in the end, too..........rolleyes.gif

Quality and selection is very different to Europe imo

I thought so too.. until i did some checking and found the items they sold me for or less the same price at the Dutch site.

But of course there will always be moaners who don't understand how ikea works.

Everything is standard that is so good about hem. I am actually quite happy with most things i buy there but of course i don't go for the cheapest of cheap and usually better quality as the local outlets.

Its the same "quality" as in Europe. But in Europe they got crap quality and good quality at Ikea too. Just check what you buy. Price does come into play.

I got a desk chair from them while all the local ones would be destroyed much faster this one is already lasting 2 years. Got an expensive bedroom cupboard, a desk, some cupboards and some other stuff.. all much better as local stuff. Not to mention a sofa with linings i can wash. Quite handy when you got a dog.

Ah, yes - desk chairs......the ones with wheels usually only last a short time. I now have a more expensive one, so far the wheels are OK, though they don't "turn" too well - like they're stiff, or something.

But, sure, some stuff at IKEA is probably crap quality - likewise a lot of stuff at the local furniture place is just generally non-quality at all. Even the display furniture is not level - and the backing panels of the bookcases (or whatever they are) are so flimsy, that they sag quite visibly. This is obviously mass-produced furniture - not the hand-made stuff......

Too, the vivid (and ugly) green and pink local furniture isn't exactly what I want to see around the house.....tongue.png

Yuk! The wife contacted IKEA to hear about delivery and such. Yeah - they deliver almost anywhere bla bla.....smile.png

....BUT you apparently have to personally go to IKEA and choose whatever you need, pay for it all and pay all the delivery costs. Then you're welcome to return to your castle and wait until the delivery truck eventually rolls by....

What you apparently CAN'T do, is sit at home and flip through the catalogue and make your choices, then order your items from the comfort of your armchair - or floor, if you haven't yet got any furniture....online ordering hasn't reached this company yet, it seems,,,

Ah, well - looks like I'll have to find other sources - sure ain't going all the way to BKK just for some furniture.......sad.pngblink.png

I can imagine the termites are going to have a field day with all this chip board, and the condensation will play havoc.

Oh you can count on that sure, termites love the cheapass woodchips, i don't understand why they don't use a chemical against termites though. Something in the glue.

I let Ikea come to my house to get that rotting stainless steel trolley. First they refused but then i told them i would tell it to the headquarter and suddenly they offered to pick it up and give me a refund. First they tried to give me a coupon instead of refund but again i told them i would talk to the headquarter and i got the refund.

Stainless steel that is rusting in 3 weeks after being wet 3 times from the gardenhose is not stainless steel but iron. So that is cheating what Ikea does. Stainless steel will never rust if it is the good quality.

But many European brands sell inferior quality in Asia i noticed. They made cheap quality products for a cheaper price.

With the cost of labour being so cheap, I can see a (perhaps temporary only) business idea here. . .

Buying furniture from Ikea and shipping it to a remote Isaan village may not be a good idea. Quality is horrible, may fall apart or rot in a years time. Have seen their products at Mega Bangna

I got quite some ikea furniture here that has lasted way over a year. I guess it all depends what you buy they have bad and good quality.

I for one am happy and its a big improvement on the Thai furniture quality that i had before. Still better would be some sold wood furniture but that gets quite expensive fast.

I bought dining talbes and chairs 3 times in 5 year (not ikea) and all the chairs broke that is Thai quality, next time i buy Ikea, it might not be much but its better as those index furniture.

Oh the horror, but at least you know that it is in stock and not that you agree that sometime gets delivered on a certain time from a Thai shop and it does not as its out of stock while they said it was in stock before.

Actually must admit the fact that you can't shop online is stupid especially as everything is available online. That is a real stupid thing of Ikea.

Yeps - agree completely, everything is online - except actually being able to buy the stuff. Weird crap, to put it mildly.

Anyway, it ain't any real big deal - I can surely find other other places.....facepalm.gifwhistling.gif will just have to use more time - and p'raps more internet......rolleyes.gif
