Aeon now charging 150 baht

Being here for 7 months we can't bring that much cash! 12000 baht a time is the most we're allowed to withdraw from an ATM in a day. On the one occasion we went to the teller and asked to withdraw 20000 baht, she just escorted us to the ATM (where we could only withdraw 12000). She just shrugged her shoulders and went back to her desk.

Open a thai bank account and transfer required funds as and when.

Unless you transfer a large sum, the fees for an international transfer are worse than the 150 charge.

that applies only to poor not so well-off people who consider 4,000 Dollars, 3,000 EURos or 2,400 Pounds a "large" sum.

Why transfer 8 month's spending money up front? Might decide to go elsewhere w00t.gif

The solution is simple - it just takes a few minutes longer. Just go into the bank with your passport & foreign credit/debit card & ask for a cash advance on your credit card. The trick is that the sum being requested must be higher than the ATM's usual maximum advance (THB 20,000?).

The bank does the paperwork, gets the authorisation, copies your passport (which you also sign) and the bank give you the cash. Best thing is that there's no fees! Not a single Baht & you get personalised service as part if the deal!

Mentioned this several times on this forum over the last 5 years. My Oz credit Union has a daily limit of $1,000 withdrawal which equates to between 25-30,000 baht depending on our "bouncy" dollar.

I use Bangkok Bank.................Word of warning some of the smaller branches, located in shopping centres, will not do it so go to a major branch and strike up a relationship.

All relative. But I certainly would never consider belittling people over it. 1503456.GIF

my comment was meant to belittle the wording "large". i humbly apologise if somebody took that personally.

On Thaivisa I learned that you can transfer money via PayPal if you have a Thai Bank. I was able to transfer dollars from my US account to PayPal then to BKK account and PayPal charged me 1%. If you transfer money within the US (bank to bank) there is no charge. My US bank did not charge me for this but would have charged me $2.50 if I used the ATM and will not let me withdraw more than $500 per day unless I telephone them every time if I can get a person. So now to withdraw $500 it will cost me $7.50 (1.5%) I don't know if this way is cheaper but it works. The only downside is the time it takes to transfer the money. The wait time is four days from US bank to PayPal and four days from PayPal to the Thai bank. I hope this helps someone. The banks always gets theirs.

I believe paypal give exceedingly poor exchange rates. I hope to be corrected.

Bangkok Bank and SCB have never declined me over the counter withdrawals, as long as the branch has a currency exchange counter.

Government Savings won't, Kasikorn will only do it with credit cards, not debit cards, Krung Thai said no, but Krung Thai seem to only ever say no to me.

In Chiang Mai have done many over the counter at Bangkok Bank Mee Chok and Siam Commercial Big C Don Chan using my UK Visa Debit card, always over 50k though.

You can, but your overseas bank will charge to make the transfer, which would probably be more than 150 baht.

It depends on who you use, long time expats will I assure you use ways and means which are very inexpensive by comparison,I can transfer money from the UK for as little as £ 9 GBP, that's 483.23 baht at today's exchange rate,if you can't afford that then you really should consider why you live in Thailand and fret over banking and ATM fees.

Where are you from? If you are from Europe then just call your bank and ask them to raise your withdrawal limit. Your bank sets the limit; not AEON. When I used to use Maestro Card to withdraw from ATM's, my daily limit was 5,000 CHF or 180,000 THB appx. I tested it once and withdrew 70,000 THB in 24 hours; one transaction for 55K THB and then 15K THB about 9 hours later. Both at AEON Super Highway.

If you are American well then you are probably out of luck as the U.S. Nanny State doesn't want you doing stuff like that. I could be wrong but I suspect the same applies to citizens of the U.K. and Australia.

Your sarcasm is totally inappropriate and incorrect.

He did it years ago. Now it was 20,000 baht max. but you could make two withdrawals. My one bank would not allow me more than $1,000 a day Canadian But they had no problem with a $6,000 hospital bill. I called them and they said it was their policy No matter that my credit limit was far higher than that.

The withdrawals were not free AEON did not get any money out of it but my Canadian bank got $5 out of it. At the time it was a saving of about 3 baht on a 20,000 baht withdrawal. Hardly worth the effort unless the machine was handy.

One day last week I withdrew 10,000 baht and then went to the K bank and with drew 10,000 baht. I had to pay the 150 baht at the K bank. When I finally got the figures on my computer I had saved .23 cents Canadian.

> I thought they dont let foreigners open a bank account with transfer abilities?

This is to get money into your Thailand based Bangkok Bank account, routed through their US office.

Any bank account anywhere you can transfer money into. That's how banks do. wink.png

Not sure on that. I have been under the impression it is only the bank of Bangkok that has a branch in another country that you can do that with.

I know I can do it with my Canadian bank but the rates make it not worth it. Easier to go into the bank use my credit card for hopefully enough money for the month put it in their bank bank of Siam in my case and use the card from their bank no charge at any Bank of Siam.

I understand the OP when he talked about his ATM as against his credit card. My bank charges me big time on the ATM card but I have a Visa with the same bank and they do not charge me.

Some day I am going to try to use my ATM card for my Visa and see if they charge me then. I have the card set up to get money out of three different accounts. Each with a large maximum withdrawal.

Yeah, exchange rates suck on Paypal. So looking at transferring it out of Paypal in USD to Bangkok Bank's US branch, then routing it to my Thai Bangkok bank account. That should use Bangkok Bank's exchange rate which is much better.

So far got stuck adding the routing though, I sent a support request to Paypal.

Go to Bangkok Bank at Kad Suan Kaew. Don't go inside the bank. Use the foreign currency counter on the outside.. Present your credit card and your passport and tell them how much you want to withdraw. They'll use a chip and pin machine and give you whatever cash you want as long as your CC will stand it.

I think if you go inside any bank they will let you withdraw up to the credit limit set by the issuing bank. There problem is that they don't always have their machine in order I use the Siam bank in the Night Bazaar and several times they have told me their machine in the bank is not working. Use the one outside. One time I was insistent and one of the tellers took me to a bank where the inside machine was working.

I believe to withdraw it you have to see one of the workers art a desk not a teller. I could be wrong on that.

So now that all the bloody ATMs are charging 150 (costing me 7 per translation now) witch bank has the best exchange rates. Don't mind what it says on their windows, who's give the best rates on your statements?

Check your statements and see if the banks were charging you. Mine was $5.

Take out a larger sum of money 7% is only on small withdrawal's.

It gets smaller with larger withdrawal's.

My ATM card if I draw out a small enough amount would be a 100% charge as the charge for the withdrawl is the same on 1,000 baht as it is on 20,000 baht.

The chip and pin at BKK Bank at KSK is in regular use and does work. That's why I suggested the OP goes there. It does work. I use it myself.

So that's that then - nowhere to withdraw cash without the 150 baht charge.

Unless someone knows better .....!
If you're American, open (online) a Charles Schwab Bank account! This marvelous institution refunds all ATM fees and charges no foreign transaction fees. Forget Aeon's out-of-the-way and distant locations (from the center of town, at any rate).
Incidentally, some credit unions (mine is Stanford FCU) offer the same advantages. To join you may have to jump through a few hoops, but the savings and convenience are worth the effort.

If I go to the bank inside and withdraw enough money for the month it cost me $5. I am not traveling all over Chiang Mai or jumping through hoops and over rivers to save $5 a month. If your bank gives you back the ATM charge that is good mine does not.

I had to withdraw 10,000 baht today from a machine at Siam bank. It had a sign on it saying it did not honor military and some other card I had never heard of until this thread mentioned the military bank card. Not sure of the name. It was the Bank of Siam Night Bazaar machine. Holiday so they were closed.

Follow-Up to Self:

Paypal contacted me (by phone!) and got it sorted; I was able to add my Bangkok Bank account through their New York branch, meaning Paypal doesn't get to make money using their crappy exchange rates; it stays in US dollar until it hits Bangkok Bank, at which point the regular Bangkok Bank exchange rate is used.

Note that this applies to any US bank account, not just Paypal: When you route it through the Bangkok Bank New York branch, you get a great exchange rate, and the costs are reasonable, as follows:

Source: http://www.bangkokbank.com/BangkokBank/PersonalBanking/DailyBanking/TransferingFunds/TransferringIntoThailand/ReceivingFundsfromUSA/Pages/ReceivingFundsfromUSA.aspx

I just transferred $50 as a trial. It's interesting by the way how sub-$50 amounts are totally free. Then once you get a little higher than that the fee isn't very good ($3 charged on a $100 transfer). But once you get into Naam territory, the fees are very reasonable again: Losing $ 10 on a US$ 50,000 baht transfer, that's nothing.

I now wonder if you can just transfer $50 every day, and keep it free. Or even multiple $50 transfers per day.. Hmm.

I'm not fretting, it doesn't cost me anywhere near £9 to transfer funds from the UK. On that basis, you should go back to the drawing board and start fretting as you're the one lining the fat cats pockets.
