I am travelling to Thailand on a double entry visa and I am bringing my dog with me.  i am finding conflicting information about what I need.  i know about the medical requirements but have just heard about needing to apply for a permit at the Department of Livestock.  Does anyone know about this?

You need the dog to have their rabies vaccinations up to date and all of the paperwork.

You will visit the vet at the airport, they'll do a visual evaluation, look at the paperwork and if all is good you're on your way.

We brought two Yorkies with us to Thailand from Minnesota. We had to have current vet paperwork as well as a permit from the USDA. If I recall it cost about $50 for the permit. Make sure you check up on this extra opportunity to pay tax to the U.S. government. No need to be disappointed at the airport. I heard it is much easier to bring a pet back to the states. Just current rabies shot, etc.

Hi Bruce....,

I thought that was all I needed but was sent forms from  pet travel company that showed I needed to apply for a permit from the DOL in Thailand.  I've also had replies that say i have to do this.

Yes, you need a form from customs/livestock department in Thailand. They'll email it to you if you ask. You then email that back and they'll email you an import authorization. Just print it and bring it with you. Send me a PM if you want the contact information. I did this three years ago and they were very helpful.

In 2010 I brought my dog from the USA . I needed a USDA form stamped within ten days of departure. That was the biggest problem dealing with the USDA . Once I got to Bangkok with the dog I checked into Agriculture near the baggage terminal . They inspected my documents charged me 250 baht and gave me a document to present to customs on my way out . I Easley could have walked right through customs as my dog was in a carrier that looked like a piece of luggage but I did not . Customs looked at my papers and charged me 1000 baht . Wife pictched a fit but I had read this was common so we paid and got a receipt which was stamped and authentic so I know the money wasn't pocketed ... Was very easy . We did call Agriculture in Bangkok several days before we departed and they requested a copy of my wifes Thai passport and a photo of her and the dog which we emailed to them ......

I brought my cat, with all the necessary medical requirements - $300 in medical fees, but no livestock certificate...(LOL)

The airlines insisted that all animals be in a carrier and checked as luggage - $250.

Attendants from two European airlines were curious and asked why I had the cat in a carrier - to check in - they were surprised, as apparently animals go on board with owners on most Europan airlines...

However, upon entry into Thailand, no one asked any questions - many did say 'cute cat', one asked why I had it in a carrier...(GAWD)

Finally, after I was checked in, had my luggage and was ready for a taxi, I noticed the Animal Control center, which had a check in counter.

Being mindful of the law, I took the cat and his book of documents to them.

The each insisted on petting the cat and said my how cute, but they also refused to examine any papers - the senior officer said documents for pets were unnecessary.

SO, YES, getting your dog out of your country, may require all the documents required by Thailand, but don't expect anyone to care at this end.

You require an Import Permit, then take copy to your local government veterinary depot for an Export Permit. You will require rabis, triple shots and lepto shots one month minimum prior to departure. May I suggest you contact SKY TRADE Company at the airport a they will do everything to clear you through customs and vet checks. I have always used them and have imported several dogs painlessly this way. Are we talking dogs here? If so bull breeds are not permitted here so be warned!

Hi All,

I really appreciate all of your input and hope that you can assist me one more time.....before I have a breakdown!!!  I have just found out that, since I am connecting through Seoul I need to meet all of their pet requirements. One of these is a test for rabies antibodies that needed to be completed in January.  Obviously, this is impossible so I am wondering if anyone else has gone through similar roadblocks and how these difficulties were solved.

Thanks,

Sharron

Unfortunately, if you fly through a country that has special requirements, you have to meet them. No way around that. Either change the flight to one with a stop in a different country (many have minimal requirements) or look for an airline that can handle this for you.

Also, I wanted to add that I wasn't asked for any extra money. I just paid the 250 for the certificate.

Thanks again but, FYI, I called the quarantine office in Seoul and was told that, since I will only be in the airport for 2 hours then continuing to another country, there are no special requirements.  Whew!

Dotx, can you say more about having the meet the requirements of the country you are flying through?  I am trying to determine if I have to meet the requirements of the Phillipines as I have a layover there for a few hours on my way to San Francisco.  I called the Phillipines animal welfare department and they said that no import permit was required.
