BANGKOK: -- Sonthiyarn Chuenruthainaitham, a co-leader of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) was escorted by the police to the Criminal Court today for extension of his detention for another week before the first 7-day detention will expire.

The former editor of T News Channel was charged by the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order of defying the state of emergency decree.

Under the decree, the police are allowed to detain violator for a week for questioning and the violator is considered just a suspect who must be treated and detained in appropriate place, not police cell or prison.

Extension of detention must be sought from the court and only seven days for each request will be permitted. In total, detention period is set at 30 days

Sonthiyarn’s lawyer will seek temporary release on bail from the court today though the police would recommend the court not to allow bail.

He was arrested while having lunch at Central Lard Phrao.

Police located his whereabout shortly after he switched on his mobile phone and clicked on LINE chat.

lets wait and see what the courts say, this could become a real eye opener for everyone. If they back the police they are disgreeing with the constitutional court and if they back the protesters then the ptp are screwed.

What a profoundly silly exercise. The prisons intended to be filled to the brim with the spoils of Chalerm's emergency decree - now are occupied by one man, caught red-handed in the archaic act of attempting to digest a meal in a food stall of a public mall.

I envisage him being released, if not unconditionally, then on bail awaiting alleged 'criminal' charges, since the courts have already ruled that there is insufficient evidence of sedition in any of the numerous cases where arrest warrants have been sought.

I also expect to hear some comment about the DSI Chief, Tarit, overstepping his authority by not allowing someone detained, under the very suspect use of the emergency decree, to seek bail.

yesterday 'immigration committee' denied Satis' deportation since he is not considered as a 'security threat' to the country.

today court ruled out Sonthiyarn's extended detention request, saying 7 days is enough.

would it be possible one day the court says - the emergency decree has no legal foundation, they every is free :-)

Criminal court rejects extended detention for PDRC leader

225459-imagejpeg-345829-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court today rejected the request of the police to extend the detention of a leader of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) by another week and ordered that he be freed on Monday.

The court’s rejection came after the police under command of the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (CMPO) sought permission to detain the protest leader Sonthiyarn Chuenruethai-naitham for seven more days after the first permissible 7-day period empowered to the police by law expires Monday.

But the court rejected on ground of having no substantial evidence to extend the detention period. Instead it ordered that the leader Sonthiyarn be freed on Monday.

Big blow for the DSI...

By the way, stop using LINE chat if you want to have a "private" lunch. "Police located his whereabout shortly after he switched on his mobile phone and clicked on LINE chat."

He'd heard there were some new free stickers available and couldn't resist....

My money is on him getting bail or at worst.... no extension.

The CC have ruled the protests are legal and that removes all credibility for the arrest and detention.

Isn't it going to be fun when all these weasels have to account for their "unusual wealth".

Court, " Ok please list all you assets, that includes bank accounts, land and real estate holdings, investment accounts, cars, paintings, antiques, gold, for yourself and family - don't forget the house keeper, driver and gardener. All tax returns for the last 10 years, invoices and receipts for everything over Bht10, 000 and gifts to other than family exceeding Bht 10,000. Further, any assets uncovered in our investigation linked to yourself and not listed will be immediately confiscated and become property of Thailand" " Now is that understood, please hand your passport/s to the bailiff and you are due back here tomorrow with all the aforementioned information in triplicate, don't forget to sign each page.

Police Told By Court To Release PCAD Coordinator

By Khaosod English

13922781201392278168l.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The police are instructed by the court to release a prominent anti-government activist less than a week since he was arrested.

Mr. Sonthiyarn Chuenruethai-naitham, a core leader of the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD) and a former director of an anti-government TV channel, was apprehended by the police 4 days ago due to his involvement with the ongoing protests, which are in principle banned under the emergency decree.

The police also currently hold arrest warrants on other PCAD leaders such as Mr. Suthep Thaugsuban, and many observers see Mr. Sonthiyarn′s arrest as the beginning of the authorities′ offensive move against the protest leadership.

But today the Ratchada Criminal Court ruled that the police must release Mr. Sonthiyarn, claiming that the suspect has been fully cooperating with the police in their investigation.

"Therefore, it is beyond reasonable cause to detain the suspect any further," the court statement reads.

The police previously denied Mr. Sonthiyarn a bail release, due to the enactment of the State of Emergency, which allowed the police to detain suspects up to a week without any charge.

Speaking at the court, Mr. Sonthiyarn cheerfully told reporters that he is in good health, as the police have taken good care of him.

Nevertheless, Mr. Sonthiyarn said he would take legal action against the officers who raided his residence after his arrest, alleging that the police have illegally entered his properties.

The PCAD leader would be released later today at Pathum Thani Border Patrol Police headquarters, where he had been detained in recent days, police said.

Just thought I'd re-post what I offered at 11:58 this morning, with a slightly smug look on my face. There really was no option but to release him on the same grounds as the refusal to deport Seghal, he is clearly no threat to security...!

Yet Line developers (forget their name) insist it is impossible to track the conversations. So, do they have some kind of agreement with the Thai police or what?
