Mac hard drive repair

Does anyone have a recommendation for a shop that is expert in Mac hard drive repair, or I suppose, in hard drive repair in general. I have one that needs data recovery, but the good folks at Taylor Mark in Dallas, said there was a physical problem with it that needed fixing first. They told me, but not being a techie, I forget the exact issue. Suffice it to say, something hit a light pole (internally) and they need $1800 to repair it before they can even approach the data recovery.

Since I'm headed back in a few weeks anyway, I thought maybe I'd get it fixed in Thailand if its feasible. If not, I'll have these folks dig in.

Thanks,

dr. b

My friend died, but he worked for Western Digital. They have a huge factory near Ayuthaya. I would take the HDD to them and not mess around with small shops. Thailand is making most of the world's hard drives AFAIK.

Good luck!

Here's the Hard Disk out of my old MAC

post-134820-0-66689300-1392482597_thumb.

Like 25% of the worlds Hard Disks this was manufactured in Thailand.

If your Hard Disk was also made in Thailand, then contacting the factory may be a good start, they may have a premium service, I'm sure it wouldnt be the first time they have been asked either....

Of course you have to make it clear that you don't expect this done for 1000 Baht (like some amateur in Pantip), you will pay the evaluation fee up front and accept that even if it can't be recovered that you won't get a refund.

Try acsdata, http://acsdata.com/ . It might cost you a second drive to get your data back, but these guys have the right approach.

You can see what they do on youtube.

I seriously doubt the factory will be able to help. They produce the disks not repair them. And they probably don't have a procedure to process your request.

It took me 10 seconds to search that seagate (who also happen to manufacture in Thailand) offer data recovery services..

Google, was probably the best place to check.. also see http://www.datarecoverythai.com/

I had a similar issue just last week (Feb '14): The HD in my Mac Mini failed...

At Fortune Town (Ratchadapisek Rd) on the 4th (I think) floor, (North End of the Mall) there is an Apple specialist (to the left of iStudio)

They were able to repair my Mac Mini by replacing my Hard Drive (a new 1TB HD was 2300 baht) and transferred all the data from my old Hard Drive.

The Fix cost 1600 baht and took a couple of days. My computer is now exactly the same as it was (just with a larger memory).

The success all depends on how damaged your HD is and how readily recoverable the data is.

In your shoes I'd definitely be heading down to Fortune Town, which is also on a convenient MRT stop (Phra Ram 9).

Mac mini you say, maybe I'm having the same problem it keeps going grey and gives me 4 options. Reinstall from internet which I can't because the keyboard ain't working and reinstall from hard drive or time capsule. Was this similar?

Not sure if this is relevant, but there is an issue on Mavericks with their last update.... causing screen to flicker all over the place... sometimes.....on my Mac Mini to thunderbolt screen ... .w00t.gif HDMI to TV seems to be OK. wink.png(I am not sure about other monitors... )

My local Mac guy on Samui told me this yesterday... and that it is a problem with Mac Pro's also.... there is a patch supposed to be coming soon....whistling.giffacepalm.gif

There seems to be no problem with this on Mac Air.... to Thunderbolt screen

I'd tell you, but you have to denounce Liverpool first !! giggle.gif

Unfair I know...

The issue doesn't seem exactly the same. My Mac Mini wouldn't even boot. When turning it on I would only see a grey screen with a flashing folder icon in the centre of the screen.

A google search (on my laptop) told me that this was an HD issue.

It could be that your OSX has been corrupted somehow - A visit to the Mac centre should be a quick fix (if you live near one).

The talk of it being a MAC or not is quite frankly irrelevant (although on a more advanced level the format may have implications). HD's are generic.

So if data is still recoverable it would not matter if the drive is formatted as HFS,NTFS,FAT or any other format. Just inform the data recovery engineer.
