BANGKOK: -- A policeman has been wounded by gunshot as the police approached anti-government protest sites near Phanfa Bridge.

Riot police were attempting to clear anti-government protesters from Ratchadamnoen Avenue where the demonstrators have erected barricades and blocked traffic for weeks.

Gunfire was heard in the area at around noon time, and one policeman was shot in the head. His condition is described as severe.

Some explosions could also be heard near the police line, causing the officers to withdraw from the confrontation and reform a new line. The mood in the area is increasingly tense, our correspondent adds.

well that's the stupidest thing they can do, they will not win a gun fight with the police, if they shoot their shitty old pistols and make-shift firecrackers at the police then the police are forced to kill them with m16s, obvioulsy alot of these idiots think like you and beleive they can win a 'gun-fight'

Hopefully the protesters are correctly armed and didn't bring knives to a gun fight.

about time this garbage was cleared up.

police have snipers in place also. must be close to time for them to be given the order.

can only hope that the violence is well contatined now. seems to be a small area and most of the mob are corralled in it.

obvious even from bluesky and nation that military grade weapons been fired from PDRC.

good idea for it to be live on TV, can see who is the bad guys now
