What Hydroponics Setup for Herbs?

Hi Guys,

So my wife and I have quickly learnt that herbs and veg in general does not seem to keep long out here in LOS, even in the fridge! So I have been looking into setting up a hydrophonic grow area on my rear balcony. Space is limited but it is unused so I could easily cover it with sun netting.

I have some information on the prices for various setups but I am bit unsure as to which type is best to grow the following:

  • Cilantro (Corriander)
  • Basil
  • Thyme
  • Oregano
  • Rosemary
  • Dill
  • Mint
  • Holy Basil, Thai Sweet, Lemon Basil

Basically the herbs could grow back in the UK.

It would be nice to be able to grow other things like tomatoes, spring onion, lettice etc however the main focus for the setup would be a constant supply of fresh herbs listed above.

The setups I have researched are NFT (Nutrient Film Technique), EBB and Flow, DFT (Deep Flow Technique), DRF (Dynamic Rout Flow) nad Drip and Creep. I am edging towards NFT simply because I know people at work that have that setup, although they use it more for greens and leafy salad lettice etc. I should in theory be able to install a 2 Metre NFT Kit found here: http://www.ackhydrofarm.com/products=id9_eng.php?page=idp9_eng.php&accessories_eng=accessories_eng.php, providing it can stradle over the aircon unit (64mm high) with the legs either side. This would cost 6500 baht for setup then I guess nutrients etc.

If anyone could offer any advice I would really appreciate it as I am very new to this way of growing. Cheers thumbsup.gif

Hello All, Fresh Gardens might be a better place to look for the

area you have for a system. They are the next stop after The Emporium

on the BTS. They mostly had NTF systems, but also had one's that are

like steps and take up less of a footprint.

Again my info is 4-5 years old, there is info on them in one of the old hydro

threads, don't forget about 3K Bt. for a EC meter.

Hello All, this is from FG's on a google search. The vans in the pic iid fro the school next door.

rice55 Oh, this system come 1M, 1.5M and 3M.

From our research and development of Hydroponics System with foreign researchers, we have found the planting technology to yield the maximum profit in every circumstance, such as in dry areas and areas of limited size, and can control the growing patterns in every kind of weather, free of insects and diseases, known as the “Hydroponics system”. This is a soil-less planting system which uses very little water when compared to soil planting systems. The system uses nutrients, and is easy to take care of. The system provides a reliable and regular quantity and quality of vegetables making the hydroponics system worthwhile for any investments.Fresh Garden Hydroponics Center Fresh Garden Co., Ltd. was found in the year of 1998 by Mr.Vichai Rosarpitak with the initial capital of 1 million baht. The company manufactures and trades plastic gully for Hydroponics system and the other related equipments such as seed, growing cup, measurable equipments, and nutrient. The company is growing with increasing sales volume year by year.

Since the Rosemary and oregano are evergreen, I am not sure worth trying to grow these in a hydroponic situation... just put in large pots with well drained soil! neither like "wet feet" ..

You can just pick these as required.

I think too, the mint will not be easy to do in this fashion (just the way the roots spread)

My local hydroponic farm grows these above items in soil.... there are images posted some where in farm photos if you care to look! not sure where, but fairly recently posted...

When picking fresh herbs, if you want to extend "shelf life" put them into a jar with some water in the veg tray area of your fridge... will keep a few days longer!

You will want some direct sunlight. I have grown hydroponic lettuce in "no direct sunlight" and they grow, but they don't form heads. In essence, their leaves are always reaching for sun, and since there was never any direct sunlight, they became mis-shapen.

Your balcony would do well with a Kratky Hydroponic system. This involves no air pumps, no water pumps, and is a floating raft style of shallow to medium water culture.

Your plants will still grow, just maybe not as well. Do you at least get 1-2 hours of direct sunlight?

Thanks for that info guys.

So just to confirm will a NFT system be suitable for what I want to grow? Also on a side note will the hydroponics system still need lots of light? My rear balcony doesnt really get any direct.
