Hmmm, two things, lets try : (i) Untreated effluence building up during the dry season and no control (ii) Heavy rain last night across the west coast. There we go. QED. Heavy rain where? Popular Post Sam Gold
If you abuse your environment for greed what do you expect. Once you have destroyed it completely you will be left sitting alone and asking the question, why don't the tourists come any more. Problem is, it takes more than that to scare Russians away. More and more of them pour relentlessly into Pattaya and Phuket each year, as they now feel more at home there than the Thais do - it's actually worth seeing once as it's so overwhelmingly absurd.
bigbamboo
had to go to phuket on business a couple of years ago, why anyone would go there for a holiday amazes me. Bits of it are OK but there's too much that is naff and certainly doesn't feel like an island let alone a paradise.

Slow but surely they are killing the place. Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam will eventually take over I often have a late afternoon walk along Patong beach and see the Russian sun worshipers getting there fix , all the above countries have the same sun and you believe these countries have a better infra-structure in place to deal with waste etc? Nope, been to them all and they don't.

DrTuner
The amount of beaches in Thailand I'm willing to go have a swim at is steadily decreasing. Soon it's holiday in Cambodia/Myanmar/Malesia if I want to go to the beach, I suppose. With the living costs going up all the time and the constant political BS here .. the value of Thailand is getting lower.

Have the Russians taken over, it was once an Aussie place, well they made up the largest number of tourists. Bali and Phuket. Anyway who cares about both places. My wife and I catch cheap flights to the west coast of Australia 75 Aud per person ex bkk 4 hours and you have nearly 2000 kms of prestine coast line. No deck chairs, no soi dogs or garbage and hardly a person to be spotted. We hire a camper van for a week and it beats Phuket hands down and all for around the same price overall. I come from the east coast so I am not promoting W.A
me313
The last time I swam at a beach in Phuket was a few years ago, when a host of rubbery plastic "things" were floating in the entire Nai Harn beach area (it was during summer months, low season). The few times I swam at the beach in Phuket, I used goggles and observed ropes, plastic bags, pieces of material floating near the bottom--- since then, I much prefer using swimming pools, and then I can't be sure if the pools are being chlorinated correctly
